Hello

I would really appreciate some clear advise. I am looking to purchase a small rib (3 meters) with a small 6hp outboard. I mainly would be using this boat for gentle periodic days out on Hamble river perhaps a spot of fishing etc.

Please could I ask do I need a boating licence for such an activity? Secondly I guess insurance would be mandated? Finally would there be a requirement to go on any particular training course?

Thank you in advance for any advise to assist me further.

Thanks

Steven

No licence needed for salt water boating in the UK, insurance is prudent with anything floaty bigger than a paddleboard(especially with fast vessels; a 3m rib will plane with even an outboard that small and achieve enough speed to get the inexperienced into trouble). If you feel you want some training then RYA powerboat 2 is probably the entry level qualification appropriate to what you want to do; there are loads of sea schools on the solent which will give you a PB2 in exchange for money and a few hours tuition.

Thank you penfold for sound advice. Can you confirm if there are any charges to use the river?

yes ----charges apply---harbour masters office at warsash----good launching place ----car parking and pub

Harbour dues are covered by my Hamble berth. But before I berthed on the Hamble not once have I ever been checked or asked if I’d paid any fees to the HM.

Now that surprised me. I have used my 3.9 m sib on the hamble many times and never aware I had to pay. No one ever asked me to or challenged me. So I might just carry on as before.

One of the best places to set up is Hamble Le Rice in my view. Car park right near the public hard and quite cheap for a day ticket

Agreed, like I said earlier, I’ve used the Hamble for many years and never been stopped or asked for money to use it.
The beaulieu river the same.
