[/ QUOTE ]I think that question should be asked separately to two groups: exhibitors and visitors! I'd expect you'll get radically different answers. An empty show could be "fantastic" for punters, but a "flop" for exhibitors.
I really really wanted to like it. It was my first Excel and I'd been to lots of Earls Court shows and a few SIBS. What bugged me was:
The shed like venue (we all know that); the very few yachts on display
The acres of chandlers selling for exactly the same price as they do online (and a few prices were higher than online, e.g. the Spinlock lifejacket).
The main stage was a smallish catwalk tucked away in the far corner.
The shocking cost of food and drink (£5 for a baked potato and £3.40 for a pint of orange juice and water)
Overall it wasn't bad, it wasn't dire, but it was hardly a razzle dazzle feast of boating fun to help support a multi-billion dollar industry that needs all the help it can get.
I visited last Monday evening (12th), and XL was empty. I felt very sorry for the exhibitors, as there was very little to break their boredam. However, I understand that Prosser marine sold 3 large Fairlines, so they must be quite happy.
