Hi sorry to introduce myself with a want but such is my need. I have recently become a joint owner of a 52ft WW2 harbour launch fitted with an old Leyland diesel engine.I have managed to get engine running for the first time in years and she purrs like a pussycat but we have no bellhousing and an unknown condition gearbox. So I am after some help with which bellhousing and gearbox to got for? I have been advised that she requires a 2.1 ratio and maybe PRM 500 may be the best and that I shud be looking for a SAE 3 bellhousing? Any ideas? Also can anybody help identify the engine better? Many thanks in advance. Sean

That's a vehicle clutch on the back of it.

Its not going to fit inside a bellhousing for a marine box, that will need to come off and you'll need a flexi drive plate, bellhousing and gearbox.

'Lateboater1' would be able to advise.

Thanks guys. I contacted Mike at Lancing and he comfirmed that we are looking for a Prm 500 plus a flexplate and SAE3 bellhousing but new prices are shocking! Now I can breath again if only in short sharp breaths I may try to source a second hand box and take it from there...

I am stuggling here.

You have a Bathgate built Leyland 6.98 around 100 Hp.

Looks like SAE 3 flywheel housing, from Leyland Boxer, I would guess. Ben is quite correct you have automotive Borg and Beck clutch.

You need SAE3 adaptor plate and R&D drive plate comes to less than £1k so why the eek, does not sound a bunch of cash, what would you expect?

6.98 was a good motor however you need to be aware that left idle 6.98 liners will go porous unless you use DCA water treatment.

Try foulkes yard upper hamble river there are parts lying around there from years back, you can get really anything, admittedly not new but a lot cheaper than new.

It called the barge.

yes as I said new box, housing and all extra bits but more like 3k than 1 and that is  to me perhaps Im just poor:o but thanks for your input it all helps:D

Misunderstood thought you only needed SAE adaptor and R & D coupling, £3K does not sound unreasonable for the three items, however before you go a hunting for second hand you need to establish which reduction ratio you require, displacement and current prop size will be needed. Did you ask Lancing to do the calculation for you?

Truck spec 6/98's were generally 2,600 rpm rated speed, my gut feel even without the vital data is that 2:1 is nowhere deep enough for the job.

If you have not already done so PM me and I can do it by Crouches method in a few minutes.

Getting a bargain box of the wrong ratio will prove expensive.

What is this

I have a 6/98 (Thornycroft 345 badged) and your comment on porous liners is worrying. What is DCA water treatment?

Pretty common problem on 4/98 in JCB and Leyland tractors. However Fleetguard DCA4 is complete fix http://www.cumminsfiltration.com/html/en/products/cooling/coolant/supp_add.html Thre are other makes of SCA Supplimental Coolant Additive on the market but DCA is the most common.

When Leyland were on last iteration of the 6/98 in the Roadrunner use of Fleetguard DCA4 was mandated in service literature.

Sean,

Just applied some lateral thought to your problem. Years ago asked to look at replacing old Detroit 4-71 from a Dutch barge. It was the first time I had ever considered use of Korean Dong I gearbox. Agents are Watamota in Newton Abbot. I used a DMT25AL which would be about right for your application. Dong I boxes are pretty much copies of very robust old Twin Disc designs and quality is first class.

However the big bonus is the 'package' gearbox comes complete with SAE adaptor plate and the lovely reliable Twin Disc style RDB rubber block coupling, Bowman style gearbox oil cooler with bronze end caps (bet that was missed from shopping list) and propshaft half coupling even a small tool kit in all inclusive and competitive price.

Sounded a little Mickey Mouse at the time, however Watermota have developed a darn good reputation with these bomb proof Dong I gearboxes in the commercial marine market, which hurt PRM badly.

Worth getting a quote
