Anyone know where I can get pawl springs for a lewmar 40? Plenty of chandlers sell pawls plus springs in a package at a ludicrous price, but I just want springs. Ebay has a seller down in Plymouth but the bastard is trying to charge 10 quid for postage.

Ah! My mistake. It's the same guy in Plymouth, I had my e-bay settings to my Spanish address, hence the high postage. Now eating humble pie...

I needed four pawl springs for a Barlow 16 non self tailer here in NZ.

Only source was in OZ, came as a kit with four new pawls as well, 50 Dollars Australian plus 15 Dollars P/P.

I used four safety pins. Snipped the ends at the right length, expanded them a bit and voila! The winch works really well.

Stripped and inspected after a couple of months, still springy, no noticeable relaxation of the safety pins ends.

As my old mate Bill used to tell me " Boy - an Engineer is a man who can make for a tanner what anyone can buy for a quid! "

If I could find some spring wire I would wind some myself. But, hey, the safety pins are working!

I got the idea after repairing the ratchet spring from a high quality fixed spool fishing reel that a friend chucked out. A safety pin fixed that too.
