The sheave in one of my genoa cars is worn and needs replacing but I am finding it impossible to unscrew the retaining pin. When force was applied, the allen key hole distorted allowing the the allen key to turn inside it. (Actually, it does not have the proper "saw" screw in there - that has been replaced at some time in the past by a screw and nut.) Anyway, it seems that the only option now is to drill out the screw. This would be very tricky in situ and so I wish to remove the car (or the top part of the car or, at least, the sheave block). It is not obvious to me how this can be done so can anybody advise me if it is possible other than using an extra piece of keeper track (which I do not have, of course). Any help appreciated.

Sheeve is held on u bolt, only accessible from below, so car will need to come off. Do you have slider bars or delrin balls in the car. If former, easy, remove end stop on track and slide off. If balls, ideally slide off onto keeper track section, otherwise create coffer around trackend to collect balls as they are released. To reinstate, most of the balls can be put in place but last 4 or so which sit on the return end are fiddly. I used shaving foam to keep in place until the end cap is in position. Good luck.

When this cropped up with my boat some years ago the new Lewmar sheaves were a very silly price, I thought. I replaced both cars complete with Barton ones, which have proved to be rock-solid reliable and cost less than two new sheaves from Lewmar.
