my boat has two lewmar coastal hatches SZ 30 14H8 . this hatches were discontinued and replaced by the low profile ones. Mine are in perfect functioning order except for the acrilics that are a crazed . . Aparently there is no replacement kit for the glaze. I dont feel very happy to spend almost 900 pounds when the problem is a 50 pound acrilic glaze ....Any help or hints?

Obviously won't take crazing out, but my hatches were scratched badly. I gave them a good polish with 3M Finesse it, came up really well. I tried some by hand, but found it worked very well with an electric polisher.

Try Seateach chandlery at Emsworth, Hants; they have a good website and offer glazing, seals etc for Lewmar and other hatches - they also sell the whole hatches at good prices.

Check their measurements compared to your actual ones though !

Trouble is some of us have a lower opinion of Sea Teach than you do of staying a night in Newport IOW.

Pete,

actually I feel the same as you and your chums; a few years ago I spent over £6,000 in 2 quick visits there, but when a battery proved faulty they refused to honour the guarantee...

I know several people who will never darken their doors again, one was sold a ' Houdini hatch direct replacement ' - well apart from a different size hole and different bolt spacings it was indeed a ' direct replacement ' - chum is still furious...

I now only use Seateach for stainless fastenings - which they're good at - for big ticket items I go to Force 4, and I suspect Stewart at Seateach is well aware of this and knows he p'd me and chums off seriously !

They do seem to have made efforts to improve recently with a clued up manageress; and they still seem to offer the best deals on hatches of various makes, just double check the dimensions ...

Hi Thinwater,

I'd love to see a video of you replacing the acrylic bit of a Lewmar hatch within 1 hour !

When I tried it, it became a more serious job than first appeared - and I'm quite handy with DIY...

a. I've done this a lot more than once.
b. I've done the same size more than once and have the right tools for it.
c. An hour of labor. I did allow the remover to set, and the frame had to dry after removing caulk and scrubbing.

But yeah. 5 minutes to cut the old hatch loose (apply remover 15 minutes earlier, razor knife, 8 slices and a little prying), 10 minutes to cut out a new one (span twice, corners with angle grinder, holes with holes saw), 15 minutes to remove caulk (the right remover makes a huge difference), 5 minutes to fit a new gasket (have a spool), 10 minutes to mask and caulk in, and 15 minutes for fine work. Something like that.

Re-Mov / DSR-5. Really.
