Currently have Lewmar 40s with Wincher attachments. Recent charter has spoilt me over proper self tailers. Looking at a couple of alloy (not bothered about stainless) 40 EVOs at Pirates Cave or one on eBay for less. Can get Oceans for slightly more but EVO is later model - cheapened construction?
Any possibility hole centres consistent over 3 decades?

I replaced the non-ST Lewmar 30 winches on the cabin top with Evo 30 STs and the holes were not the same. Neither were they the same as the holes that had pre-dated the non-ST 30 winches o_O

Dunno about the Lewmar 40s but I do know Lewmar misled me when I asked them so cave !

If you want to see the underside general arrangement of Lewmar size 40 winches c 1979 see here:

Lewmar size 40 winches.

These sought after winches are still for SALE at a special New Year discount, if anyone is interested. Must get around to putting them on the 'Bay.

Anyway, I fitted replacement, new, size 43 winches (not ST) and the hole spacing was different. I think the chances of any new stock matching, is as near to zero as you can get. You may get a response from Lewmar if you make it clear you are ordering new - but bear in mind the warning above.

I made 6mm transfer plates which bolted to the deck through the original holes and the new winches were screwed to this; saving the need to pepper the boat with holes and giving a sporting chance of being useful should a subsequent owner decide on self tailing jobs.

A winter walk in the Alps restores perspective. Not worth changing like for like size if won’t drop into same holes. - might as well get extra assistance for ageing body from 46STs although what I really wanted was Pocos 40 Trimmers but they have too wide a base.

Are the Pocos winches actualy available or are they just vapourware ? A couple of years ago I enquired after some to use as spi winches but couldn't find anyone who actually had any...

Pontos went into liquidation and were bought by Karver who carried out some minor re-design and now market them under their own name. Now available through most major chandleries such as Jimmy Green

I bought a new Lewmar 46ST recently from Fox's Ipswich. They were prepared to meet, indeed better, any internet price. Presumably on the basis that £x profit they wouldn't otherwise have was better than nothing. Apparently there is quite a long lead time on such winches as Lewmar production is in batches most of which is allocatted to boat builders, having said that the 6 week delivery time finally worked out at only 3 weeks.

I need to measure the rather narrow coaming top of the Sadler to see if 46s will fit. I know of one fitting Pontos 28 compacts but that was on older S32 with Barient 35s.
I thought I saw a comment possibly deleted that Lewmar EVOs not as well engineered as my 80s vintage 40s?
