After spending a fab. afternoon at anchor in our local bay I retrieved the anchor as far as the bow roller. i stopped when the anchor was at right angles to the bow roller and when I pressed up to pull the anchor over the bow there was a thump as the electrics attempted to overcome the load and then the continuous running of the motor with no drive.
( A stupid oversight on my part as I normally lift the anchor unto the bow roller).

Any thoughts on what i might have damaged as there is no drive to the gypsy _ just the motor drive!!

Did you try the thermal circuit breaker? You should have one. It is designed to trip when overload occurs to prevent the motor from burning out. My Lofrans 700W has one, set at 70 amps. If you have one, just reset it & try again?

Yep.
almost certainly the compound gear spindle has broken.
Lewmar are working on a solution to this faulty part.
I have had 2 shatter and they have both been replaced under warranty even though mine is an old out of warranty unit.

Thanks for that info. Can you help with description of gear spindle and how difficult to remove? Don't see in the exploded diagram - perhaps called something else?

Easy to remove.
Just remove the 6 or 7 caphead screws holding on the side cover. Then work off the cover , it has a couple of fitting pins to keep it in line.
The compound gear is the one in the middle and if the shaft is broken the gear just falls out .
Installing a new gear is very simple , just slide it into place , grease it well and refit the side cover using sikkaflex as the gasket seal.
