Many of us stop off at Levitha on passage, where we enjoy a warm welcome and hospitality from the Cabochon family, who fish, farm, lay buoys and have a lovely taverna. They are now threatened with eviction by Leros municipality. The family have lived on Levitha since 1820. In 2013 an energy company leased the island from Leros municipality with a view to building a windfarm. According to the municipality the island is uninhabited, because when the census was taken in 2011 the officials did not visit the island, but merely telephoned and then recorded the island as uninhabited. The municipality also claims that the buildings on the island were illegally constructed, though the original buildings date back to the Turkish occupation. The Ministry of Defence has contested the claim that the island is uninhabited, because this would undermine Greece's territorial claims under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
