Letter of Authorization from Owner to use Vessel

Slight thread drift. How does Nicky Morgan require "Authorization" to be spelt by 6 year olds?

I think the use of 'z' to replace an 's' in some words is perfectly acceptable and not incorrect. I'm showing my age but when I went to school this would not have been the case. Now thanks to google we seem to accept this as the norm. I expect we'll all be spelling this way one day but I agree a bit confusing for 6 year olds.

I think your historical account is a little off, paella, but reflects the time in which you have lived. My understanding is that the -ize ending is less an Americanism, as is commonly supposed, than a Classicism. The word in question derives from the Medieval Latin auctorizare. -ize was usual in British english, -ise endings becoming common only in the years after WWII. Whilst there is no official authority on British english spelling (or grammar), the OED is probably as close as we have: it accepts both spellings.

There are a great many myths about the supposed Americanization of English. For instance one of their words that jars particularly on British ears is "gotten" which, far from being a US invention, is pure Elizabethan English, as any reading of Shakespear will attest. (There are, of course, also many truths. But this ain't one of 'em.) Shakespear also used the zed ending (or zee, if you prefer ;)): "A womans story, at a Winters fire, Authoriz'd by her Grandam".

P.S. This is from the Church of England's website: "The Authorized Version or King James Bible..."

You can blame the Yanks for many things (more if a certain implausible quiff gets elected), but not this.

I need to give my son a "Letter of Authorization" to use my yacht in the Med. I will not be on board with him.

The yacht is registered on the SSR.

Has anyone any experience or suggestions as to the format and content of such a document ?

Any help or a typical draft would be much appreciated.
Hi Rod. If you have a template for a letter of authorisation I'd appreciate it if you could let me have a copy! Many thanks. Alastair

Also, check that your insurer doesn't expect the owner to be on board.
I know someone to had to get married to enable his more qualified OH to sail the boat to the Med as skipper without him.

Thanks for the collective wisdom gents - particularly the idea of a boat rubber stamp - we all know how impressed local Med officialdom can be with a few rubber stamps on a document :-)
I flew a single engine plane from Elstree to Corfu and back in the 1980s. A tip from a mate who'd done it was to wear a commercial pilot uniform to get through formalities in Italy and Greece.

Worked a treat!

This is a copy of what I use for my boat in Croatia, it goes in the folder with all the other boat paperwork. It survived scrutiny by the police when my brother was using the boat and got stopped in the tender to question his authorisation to use the dinghy in Croatia - I was at home in Germany at the time.

Languages are German, English and Croatian ... substitute for the languages spoken locally where your boat is located.

In France, I would go to the Marie and sign it there and have my signature legalized. They put a stamp on it and something saying you are who you are.
This makes it look much more official.

They do it for free and it only takes a couple of minutes.
