let`s say you won the Lotto Would you keep your exsisting boat or upgrade to a modern design ? Be honest i know that there are some that would never change
But really if you owned a Twister/ Sadler/ Centaur/.Jen /Ben Bav.of a certain age
Now that you could afford better, would you not do so? [This post is not a dig at anyone, but we all defend what we have ,is it because we cannot afford better?

I won a tenner last week so will be keeping the same!

The average win is what - 1.5 - 2.0m? Most would give up the 9-5, new house, cars etc. Not alot left in reality.

Would keep my First 31.7 for w/ends & the odd race, love the boat it sails beautifully, and get a charter for long distance stuff.

Dream on:))

Millions of pounds? Probably wouldn't change the boat - simply finish it with all those missing things which seem necessary for cruising, then use the rest of the money to finance life of leisure.

But having said this - we did talk about fitting out a 40+ foot hull the way we would want. But I'm not sure I could give up sailing for the duration it would take to do this.

Jeff.

I'd get two boats.
1) Oceanis 373 to keep in the Easterm Mediterranean
2) Rival 32 or Sadler 32 to sail in the UK ... probably singlehanded a lot of the time.

I think I've had my boat too long to think of selling her. It'd be like selling the dog to buy a new puppy. I'd spend a fortune getting her into concours condition for unlimited summer sailing, then buy another boat to sail in the winter. Something along the lines of a Fife yawl based in New Zealand. I think it would have to be a double rollover for me to pay for the upkeep though!

What\'s the Lotto.....

Is it one of those scratch cards that I always discard?

What do you do to win it?

How much do you win, I presume enough to buy a choice of boats outright?

Yes and no

Yes, I couldn't afford a new boat.

No, I don't want a new boat - not even if I could afford one.

It all depends what you mean by "better". "Better" for what? The boat is for pleasure and I don't believe a new boat would give me more pleasure than the old one does.

The old one is excellent for it's purpose and fits us like a glove. That's not surprising as we fitted her out from a shell to our own designs. She evolved around us and has been doing so for 28 years. When a boat is built of your own blood, sweat and tears (finest marine grade, of course) you do develop a very strong relationship with her. It's hard to explain to someone who has not felt it what it is like to love, with passion, a specific, unique boat - be she ever so humble. It's not unlike loving a person. If you love a person, as David remarks above, you don't think of trading him or her in for a "better" one. Well - I don't, anyway.

I'm not one of those that shares "the Dream" - to me, permanent (or long term) cruising would be a vision of Hell. If I could (and I can't) I wouldn't. But if I did and could I would probably choose a different boat - bigger and of a different design. As it is, there is no "better" boat for me than the one we have now. "A poor ship - but mine own".

Oh ekk .. I've only just got a boat..

What I might consider is buying a fleet of them and sticking them at strategic places around the world.../forums/images/icons/laugh.gif.. no I have to say I think I'd probably keep the boat I've got and get a horse as well!.. is that allowed?

and we did the bit, have got bene 351 named sonsy lass, went over the new bene42 and mam wasnt impressed comparing ours with it, however the 473 is gob smackingly drop dead gorgeous and perhaps we could be tempted, however only realistic change would be to keep whichever in warmer climes, thats the only thiong i miss

Re: More details required

Exactly how much dosh do we win? I mean, is this a poxy 500k or a more agreeable £19m rollover? I must say i haven't done the lottery since i parked outside the post office to collect 10 quid and got a parking ticket, gits.

I would....

...keep mine, but use some of the money to get her in absolutely top condition.
Then I would go to my boss, tell him I´m quitting and simply sail away.... for a looooong time!

Re: blowing £1,000,000 on a yot

Mm. lots of quite sooper dooper boats for this much loot. A key requirement for it to be able to book ahead at st tropez is that it must have a length of 21.5 metres long, and for this reason a secondhand Frers Wally would do the trick. Not sure this is 21.5m long but what the hell, we could lie about it. The big beneteau plus 600k is attractive, but i am assuming that I have indeed won the rollover, so there is actually loads of other money left over and I won't be quibbling about wasting a few hundred poxy grand.

Re: blowing £1,000,000 on a yot

Nice boat the Wally.Ive gone for the large Ben after spending 2 days at the show compairing finishes, could not see where all the extra dosh went in the Rassy /najad. And having sailed a Najad 42 this summer I would not waste good money on buying one. Emperors clothes comes to mind !!
That said Very disapointed with the Jen 49 very poor imho
cheers bob t
