Reading the thread on vmg, and how important it seems to some - reminds me that I haven't seen a meaningful debate on the issue of lee-bowing the tide or current on a trip when the tide is varying... anyone care to comment? especially as relating to vmg? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The way to consider the effect of tide on the wind is to treat the direction and velocity of the tidally generated wind as being equal in magnitude but 180 degree opposite. So if the tide is 2 knots going due West then the apparant wind is 2 knots East. If you happen to be sailing North on starboard ie with the wind from the due east then the apparant wind is lifted and increased, by lifted I mean the direction of the wind is further back from the bow. Hence you can sail closer and faster on a beat particularly.
