thinking of changing my standard tricolour for a led - lopolight or similar. Is there any evidence that they are actually as good in terms of visibility, as the adverts are all about economy etc?

Lots of past discussion on this but yes they do work, I have one and it is at least as visible as a filliment lamp. Would recoment the ones that are enclosed in a glass envelope like a conventional bulb - better protection and registration

I have an Orca Green I bought 2 years ago, mainly because they are USCG approved.
It is excellent, and I can recommend it.
Yessss, a little bit expensive!

I have a Lopolight tri-colour masthead unit and it has worked well for 2.5 years. I bought it for it its apparent ruggedness reliability and low battery drain.
I can vouch for the latter, it hasn't been through severe conditions, other than at moorings, but I am satisfied.
However if, as already suggested ,you search the forum there is at least one contribution which comments on Lopolight failure and poor response from a retailer- so, as always, "you pays yer money and takes yer choice"
