LED Floodlight from CPC

Just a heads-up for some handy kit...

I few weeks ago I bought an EAGLE L345A LED FLOODLIGHT 12V 10W from CPC http://cpc.farnell.com/LA05854

In addition I bought a coiled extension cord, which I hard wired in place of the original short lead http://cpc.farnell.com/CP02935

While wiring the new lead I was pleased to discover that the lamp has a proper LED driver assembly inside, and will accept 12V-24V input.

And does it actually draw ten watts?
I've got a nice led torch which was advertised on ebay as '3W'. It's fine, quite bright, but I very much doubt it is 3 watts.

If it draws 10 W, that cigar lighter plug and socket will get hot.

we have 2 of those floodlights OK but not as good for obvious reasons as a 300w sunflood

10W is less than 1A at 12v. Ciggy sockets are - typically - 15A.

I bought some LED Chip on board emitters which I believe are the actual LED of these flood lights.

certainly cheap. They are rated at 9 to 12v so need an additional series resistor. What they don't make clear is that they get very hot and need a huge heat sink or must be throttled back with a resistor about 5 ohms to manage the heat. Still need to be attached to a large power transistor heat sink or area of aluminium. So nailed to the under side of spreaders or boom
could go really well. Current I found about 2/3 an amp to be still pretty bright.
Obviously the shroud of the flood lights shown will dissipate the heat but expect them to still get pretty hot.

Depends on what you want really - some of these LEDs have a terrible CRI response - so they're fine over a narrow range of wavelengths, step outside that and you get no light.
