Thanks to initial delays and the last week of shocking weather we are still in Lerwick, planning to leave tomorrow for Bergen, but our time over there will now be short as we will be looking for a window to cross back (Stavanger to Peterhead) at or soon after the end of this month.

A possible PlanB would be to leave Fairwinds in Norway and enjoy an extended Norwegian cruise next Summer. Has anyone done this, and if so where and how much?

(Fairwinds is 27ft LOA)

I looked into this as part of retirement planning. You can sail the boa5 for 6 weeks. After which customs need to be informed. Two years is the maximum the boat can stay in Norway before tax is due. I got information from RYA that points to the Noggy link below:-

Norway | boating abroad | RYA.

Storing a foreign recreational boat in Norway - Tolletaten

Regulations concerning importation and exportation of goods (Movement of Goods Regulations) - Chapter 4 Customs procedures upon importation - Lovdata

We wintered at Grimsøy last winter. Very friendly and very efficient. It's on the east side of the Oslo fjord. A bit out in the sticks. Cost just over £2k for lift out and back in, nine months storage outside, mast up, and cover. Not the cheapest but decent.

Thanks.

I was aware of this, was more hoping for yard/marina recommendations and costs.

Can’t help with Norway - we wintered at Fehmarn, Germany.
But again this is where the CA membership can help - they have a Baltic layup guide, and lots of people doing this each year.
Nipping over to Denmark (Augustenborg) and Sweden (Orust) is also popular.

Second that for the CA. Baltic section is very active. If you do want to join then advertise here for 'friend' to recommend you. It gets you a discount and them a voucher 🙂

Yes, done that. Two thoughts: 1) you must clear it with Norway customs, there is an exemption system (from tax) which ten years or more ago was at the behest of the local tax office (Bodo in our case), but up to date info probably available online. 2) The beer and the wine froze and broke their bottles, but not the whisky.

Well, as an update on our Norwegian trip - we didn't make it and turned back a quarter of the way over after various things broke. Back in Lerwick fixing them, but probably too late in the season for Norway this year.

Bugger.

I'm sad for you. Of course, curiosity dictates that 'we need to know' which bits broke so that 'we're' able to give the best and most volatile variable advice on how to proceed.
Firstly, of course, whilst out and towards the middle of the North Sea, which anchor did you have?
Would've your trip not been more viable had you used an Anderson 22?

Sorry to hear that. But sounds like a wise skipper choice to turn round and not press on regardless.

It was getting late in the season though. When we went to Norway we left Inverness then Wick in the first weather window in late April (saves a lot of time hiking up to Shetland, we stayed at home then went up to Inverness immediately the weather window opened). Gives you the opportunity for a much longer voyage in 2026.

If you have not already explored Shetland fully, there are some great places in Shetland to see.
