Leatherman

No hesitation in recommending the Horizon HX270.
I have the 260, and the 270 is even better.

Also service in UK is by Yaesu, professional outfit.

None that I was after for the boat. They are all pretty expensive wish list types.

But did get a water-bouy, Touching the Void Deep Water DVD, 50 places to sail before you die and Essex Coast from the Air, which will be good for spotting land marks whilst were sailing up and down the coast.!!

What with the 50 places to sail before you die, and swmbo reading Paul Heiney's Last Man Across the Atlantic which seems to be giving her ideas. The future is looking wet and windy.

I got a boatie-frying pan. You know - the oblong one that actually fits a cooker /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Also a re-bound 1904 book on the History of Sailing written for the New York Yacht Club. Beautiful condition - loads of plates with special paper over them. A beautiful thing on its own. Full marks to daughter. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Another vote for the SH270.

I requested items suitable for a grab bag. Gave Santa(s) a vague briefing on the purpose of a grab bag and left the rest to him/them.

I got:

a 20 litre waterproof grab bag /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
a thermal (space) blanket /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
a pair of gel handwarmers /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
three lip balm sticks /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
a headtorch /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
a referee's whistle /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
a pack of seasickness tablets /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
a survival fishing kit /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif (Comes in a little tin accompanied by all sorts of other survival gear such as animal snare, fire making stuff, water purification tablets, a second whistle, sewing kit (?), and curious other objects I need to read the instructions to find out what they are. When I asked how I was expected to snare a rabbit and light a fire on my liferaft I was told it was for when I got washed up on some inhospitable shore. Fair enough. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
a lucky horseshoe /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif (I am instructed to mount this in the boat so I don't end up having to use the liferaft. It's not any old horseshoe, it was scavenged from Newmarket stables, so it's a special lightweight racing one!) /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
4 miniature frisbees (purpose of these not totally clear /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif)
an aquapak type bag containing a rabbit's foot for additional good fortune. (The fluffy bugs bunny from which the foot was amputated will probably haunt me forever though /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif)
Got load of chocolate too, but somehow can't see this making it into the grab bag /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

So not only are you completely kitted out if it all goes pear-shaped way offshore, but there are clear hints here of a fast North sea crossing en-route to Ostende after your stupendous Burnham performance. mmmmmmmm time to polish and streamline the keels methinks, or at least cut one of the darned things off /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

The frisbees are for that great game 'interyacht frisbee' which I last played in October in the Solent during a windless prelude to doing some racing. You also get practice at your FrisbeeOverBoard skills as an added bonus.

The only other 'waiting for the wind' game I have played is whacking each other with inflatable hammers. Mostly painless and gets rid of frustrations of no wind.

They should both be on the RNLI Safety Check List IMHO, along with a penny whistle and instructions for dancing the hornpipe to stop you going mad in the doldrums.

Advice for those with Leathermen. Get a good lanyard. They go 'plop' when they hit the water just like a £1.99 one from the filling station does....but you don't cry quite so much with the 1.99 one.

My resolution is to do MORE sailing than I did in 2008..which wasn't a lot frankly, so I hope to beat it easily.
