So we have completed the purchase of our Bigger Boat; a Moody 376. Having just upped from a 26 I mentioned to my husband why don't we stick L plates on her. It was a genuine question as to me it makes perfect sense. We can sail. We can sail safely without endangering other vessels, stray children or ourselves, but I really do think they would be a great idea. Has anybody else seen a boat with them on? I know I for one wouldn't judge anyone being honest enough to openly admit that they are learning on a new boat. It would be interesting to hear people's thoughts.

Put up a motoring cone.

Nah. You're ok. I'd rather crash my way into you and hand over my insurance details than be mistaken for a UKSA boat! I've seen what happens when they come alongside! Boats and their owners running for their lives!

As you are moving to a different boat, a voluntary green P (for 'Probationary') would perhaps be more in line with road practice; unless of course you think it's like moving up to an HGV - probably feels like it occasionally, I guess! :)

Ha! :D If you get some dustbin sized "L"'s ordered in solas tape - I'll have a couple! We moved up from a 20ft boat to a 27ft'er and having managed to sail it from Southampton to Milford Haven on the first (and only) trip last year. We're now preparing to finish the journey to North Wales....it wouldn't be a bad idea to warn everyone to watch out! :o

Exactly what my husband said!

Just fly an Italian ensign. Most people will get the message.

ColRegs, Rule 21 (g) a vessel constrained by its competence shall wear a tricolour of green, white, red. At night it shall display no lights.

P.S. Only kidding, Roberto ;)

Having also recently up sized well understand concerns particularly as a larger boat has more weight to it If you visit marinas to maybe try ones with more space in fairways so places like Berthon or Portland if venturing further afield and also avoid arrival or departure when tidal rips ongoing on Hamble . Maybe there are trip adviser reviews of marina staff out there but some can be really helpful in taking lines in Solent area if asked while others adopt the Spanish Marino approach . Same experience in France with staff but if heading over then Cherbourg marina always seems helpful and I am told offer a MOA discount on berthing . Hope you enjoy the 376 and the blog of Patience which is another 376 on an odyssey might give a few tips.
