Leaking Volvo Penta engine

I have an oil leak on a 2001 TAMD74EDC engine. No loss of power detected. No increase in engine temp. Compression value down on one cylinder only. Oil flows up the dipstick tube and has been forced back through the air filters and sprayed all around the engine room.

Have taken head off, removed pistons - no sign of any damage. However seems we may have a rogue piston ring.

Has anyone else had a problem of this kind?

See Artemis's post 'Volvo 2001 oil loss'. Sounds like the same problem. Check the ring gap for each ring: remove each ring from the piston, and reinsert it into its bore. Push it down to about 30 - 50mm from the top of the bore, then carefully measure gap between the ends of the ring. Compare that to the specified limits for ring gaps on your engine. This indicates the combined level of wear in the bore and in the ring. If the gap is too large the ring is not pressed firmly enough against the bore to form an adequate seal, causing blowby, and oil being blown out of the sump.

Check the bore itself for ovality near the top (point of maximum wear, and at 90degrees to the gudgeon pin), and compare that measurement with the standard bore size. You will then know whether or not you can get away with re-ringing, or are in need of a rebore ( or better, new engine?)

Oldharry thanks this advice. Will check as you suggest. Engine has only done 350 hrs and 80 of those was bringing the boat down to Portugal end August.

Should not be a bore problem then unless you were running very short of oil, or damaged by a broken ring

Check the crankcase breather system - I dont know this particular engine, but have heard they have very small breathers, which if blocked will give the same symptoms.

TAMD60Bs (a similar type of engine but more antiquated) have a fine breather pipe (smilar to brake pipe tubing) which, (if my memory serves me correctly?) run from the Camshaft doors (on a mini tank fitting) to the origional type dipstick hole in the sump area on an insert with O rings, this is welded to the pipe. Mine was broken (fractured at that join) and gave a similar set of symptons, plus copious amounts of oil in bilge. Perhaps some kind of relief system for crank case pressure?. IANAEADNPTBO

thanks oldharry. Engine was serviced in June by Volvo agent and on trip to Portugal we checked oils every day and only on last day did we note the oil leak.
