Now that I'm on broadband and tend to leave the PC on all day I am getting plagued with what I think are called 'pop ups' (maybe the wrong expression)
Most are telling me that I am leaking my IP address to the world and that they can stop it.
I've activated the firewall you get with XP but that makes no difference.
Any advice on what I should install to prevent these, preferably freeware but not essential.

A number of Windows NT, 2000 and XP (but not W9X or ME, at least not so far) users have recently been noticing unsolicited pop-up windows displaying a spam message. If this happens to you, there is no particular need to worry---your system has not been attacked. What has happened is that someone has sent a message to your system via the messenger service that runs on your system. Turning off the messenger service will help prevent this kind of thing from happening. Here is how to disable the messenger service:

In Windows 2000 Professional and XP, go to the Control Panel, then to Administrative Tools, and then to Services. Highlight "Messenger" and click on "Stop." You must also set the "Startup Type" to "Disabled.

Keep the firewall running and have you got anti virus software installed?

I use Norton and like it.

Just done that so lets wait and see (I'll report back tomorrow where normally I would have received at least a dozen 'messages')
I use Mcafee antivirus which reminds me from time to time of upgrades, I'm wondering if disabling 'messenger' may prevent this...let's see
thanks

neither use the messenger 'functionality' as I understand it so disabling it will not affect the live update function which is normally scheduled within Windows startup and from then within the program itself.

So far so good, no pop-ups after 3 hours and just had a windows update come through so that's working ok. Mcafee only gives me update messages once or twice a week so will have to wait, but all seems well
thanks

I think you will find that they only give you a message when they have actually received an update rather than when they go looking for one - quite sensible really!
Glad you have got rid of the problem - took us 4 weeks to find the culprit including trying adware, spyware etc

<font color=blue>In that case why would you wish to deny it to people who only read the other forums instead of allowing all to read it.

you could have alook at www.grc.com they offer a range of free security software including one specifically to combat the problem your'e having it also allows you to run regular "leak test "on your firewall to see if it is still operational also from this site you can download free zone alarm firewall , also try www.grisoft.com for free download on anti virus, and finally www.lavasoft.com and download ad-aware free of charge and that will let you track and erase allsorts of spyware that gets dowloaded without invite
have fun

24 test---passed

We have passed the 24 hr test with no pop ups. 100% effective!. Thanks cj and all for your guidence. Sorry Byron for deviation but these boat chat guys are good and do tend to be solution led as opposed to technology led, like the nerd forums.
