Quick one - Can anyone tell me if Le Havre is a good place to leave a boat for a couple of weeks? Been there before and seem to remember its all pretty secure, but not sure if it's any good if I need to return to UK after sailing the boat over this weekend. I have used Cherbourg as a temporary home before, but never Le H.

Any views very welcome.

Cheers

le Havre

Hi NDG,

Been to Le Havre a few years ago (2003) and found it solid and sheltered, with a big rise and fall on the pontoons. Should be ok I reckon and fairly safe as it is normally busy with sailing folk. The Blue Raleigh folder bike fell in there, never really was the same afterwards.(grappled up with help from others).Very skating friendly seafront.Resident skaters taught my daughter to skate in jig time!

Only time I have had an attempted break in was when it was left in Le Hrve, but that mught just be bad luck; the marina staff werre not in the slightest bit interested. Seems pretty safe from the weather though.

Le Havre security

My recollection is that the visitors slots on pontoon A in the North basin (Anse des Regates) are unprotected by security gate unlike other parts of the marina. You do have to go close by the marina office but staff may not always be there/looking. They are also fairly close to the busy esplanade. I would therefore suggest you contact the marina staff before you go and see if you can book one of the regulars' slots in the marina which are protected by security gates.
Not sure if same problem applies to visitors slots on pontoon O in south basin (Anse de Joinville) but marina staff can perhaps help.

Thanks everyone. Sounds a bit suspect security-wise, but then again maybe no worse than Cherbourg which also has no security gates (from memory). Will give it a go I think.

Cheers.

Try Honfleur, much nicer place and a ferry across the estuary.
Just back, the only problem is that you may not wish to leave!!

Agree with Mudisox re Honfleur - and they may well put you on a club mooring rather than the visitors. Visitors gets very busy and rafts out to 6 or 7!

Re Le Havre - Anse de Joinville is behind security gates and staff make regular visits to collect fees as it is very easy to pop in late and pop out early! Expensive tho - 40 squidish for 42 ft and ten you have to pay for showers!
