LCD Fading away

I know it cant be fixed but what causes it? My Radar screen (at the chart table) suddenly had a one inch grey spot at the centre at which contrast was almost nil. Over the weeks it extended and is now covering almost 80 % of the screen.
First I thought it could be condensation inside the unit but after open up the case I found the surface of the LCD absolutely clean and there is no break in the glass either.

I have an old Magellan GPS that started with a 'grey-out spot' which has over years extended across the display. Usually if I keep it cool and out of warm sunlight - it will display ok for a day or so - then it finally dies .... leave it off for a day and it comes back. New screen I'm afraid ...

Confirms my fear. No more stocks for this one according to the Manufacturer. Sh.....
