One of the reasons many boatyards ban living on board when on the hard. When one boat goes it usually will take a few with it. Got to be question mark on these cradles though. No doubt Insurers will be taking a close look.

The technical service of our marina had put a big HR on a steel cradle in front of my chandlery.
Storm came, I was working late.
The marina is located 10 miles from open sea and the office buildings shielded for the strongest winds.
I heard a series of gunshot noises, went out in the dark to have a look. The head sail roller of the boat in front of the shop had become unstuck. I remember HR used a SS wire to wind the sail in. The boat on the hard was facing the wind, seconds later the head sail was shredded. In those few moment of flapping head sail the 20 ton boat together with its steel cradle had moved 5 yards. Part of the cradle was already over the water.
Normally masts ware taken down for wintering on the hard. Head sails furled was not allowed.
The yacht that moved over concrete was there just for some days to install a new folding propeller.
Yards in Greece are not used to take down masts.
Our boat has a wooden mast in need of some maintenance. Asking around prices for 10 minutes of crane work to lower the mast was useless. I do all the work, the crane just has to lower the mast.
Most Greek yard owners put there chin forward and make a “Tssst Tssst “ noise or quote a ridicules price.
I rather surrender our mast to the woodpeckers than be robbed by a greedy crane owner.

Just talking to a Greek guy and he said that in Lavrion it was a cyclone type wind
It lifted the catamaran up off the floor then slammed it down breaking the keels,
Yachts were sucked up off the cradles by the sound of it.

The thought of being on board when that happens, it must be terrifying! We saw boats in the Golfe de Lion in their cradles with big stakes in the ground to strap them down at all cleat points. Would this have helped or caused more damage........?

Seems a sensible and relatively low cost thing to do. This one in the excellent little yard at Port Toga, Bastia, another particularly windy place.

Ah that's what we need Vyv

I like the concept, but think the hook shown would just bend under a severe load as it is only located by one prong.

I find it hard to imagine the wind speed that must have been encountered in Lavrion to do so much damage, even allowing for a domino effect. By comparison, the 55kts that I experienced in Poros was a mere zephyr.

My sincere sympathies to all who's boats were wrecked.

Steve.

Ive heard it was Lavrion marina and Olympic wasn't affected because they are slightly more sheltered. Its all very open there from the Kafaria straight,,,,,, but I was looking on AIS and cargo boats were still coming through the gap,,,,,,,most stay of until it dies down,,,,vessels going north were doing between 3 and 6 knots and south bound were doing 15....
Windy me thinks....
