I was given one of these a few weeks back and as a man whose prostate has long ago decided that I should pee every few hours I am really impressed.
(Forgive me if you all have one, but it was new to me)
As I approach in the dark, a sensor switches on a soft led light shining down in to the pan, red if the seat is up, green if it is down, it stays on long enough to complete my mission, pump and leave. No effect on my night vision, in fact it hardly wakes me, for about £13 it is well worth its cost. Not targeted particularly at yachts but my nomination for gadget of the decade.

So far (fortunately) if I stop drinking after my evening meal I can still sleep thro the night, but I shall bear your recommendation in mind in case of future deterioration of either my bladder or my resolve to not drink of an evening.

I have something similar from China ie a LED light with movement sensor. we both enjoy the automatic but soft light in the bathroom in the wee small hours. It was a bit harsh on batteries until I hooked it up to small solar panel to recharge the 4 cells.
What I want to know about the Lav light is how does it know if the seat is up or down? is there an ultrasonic sensor or similar?

When the seat is up it rests against a switch on the device.
I think.

It is not a mechanical switch, it is positioned so that the raised seat covers one of the sensors on the front. I too thought the colours were reversed but then if red has less affect on night vision and you are on watch on a night passage it is better that way round as you do not look at the green light, though some on here could talk to it.

Everybody sits on my boat, no matter what time of day, it's a long walk from five miles offshore if you don't.

Do you also usually "moonwalk" to & from the loo, like the cartoon guy in the eBay ad??

Getting to the heads normally involves much swearing. First getting out of my bunk without putting my foot in SWMBO's face. Walking past the hangers on the wall causing a pile of clothes to fall on the floor. Tripping over a pile of clothes on the floor. Tripping over the cill at the bottom of the door, and banging my head on the top of the frame. Banging my head on the open hatch in the heads. Banging my head on the open hatch in the heads again as I stand up. Tripping over the door cill, banging my head at the top, and falling back into the cabin. Getting back into the bunk, then realising I have left the light on ...
