LAST YEAR'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

A Euphemia..I went to the office to pay ,he asked "how many Metres your boat?" "11 " I replied. "Today my frien' you are 8 metres"he said.

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

Also the Newtown Creek HM, who very kindly towed us off a mud bank last summer and seemed genuinely surprised when rewarded.

Ever helpful, knows all, sees all, is everywhere. THE God of his universe.

Respect him and he will go the extra mile for you - cross him and I wouldn't want to be in your shoes.
Favorite phrase: How long is your boat today?

Another vote for Brightlingsea. Even lent me his dory when he went off duty once, because the harbour taxi wasn't running and I needed to go ashore to walk the dog. He very kindly offered to save me blowing the dinghy up.

Must also put in a vote for Zebrugge, who even ran us to the station when we had to leave the boat because of bad weather in August this year. Did you know you can't get a foot ferry from anywhere in Belgium back to the UK? No neither did I!

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

Can't you go from Zeebrugge to Hull? You certainly used to be able to. I know the Dover Ferry has gone.

The HM at Havre Gosselin, Sark - gave us a couple of crabs for lunch.

Was he really fit and bought them down to you, or did you have to climb up and get them?

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

I stand corrected you can indeed go to Hull. Unfortunately Hull didn't help as we live in Essex so we went for the train to Hook of Holland then the fast cat to Harwich.

Not sure how we would get home when the fast cat goes later this year as that was the only foot ferry to Essex / Suffolk area. Would have to be calais dover or hitch a lift.

Does a moped count as a motorised vehicle!

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

Mike and his staff at Beaulieu River, I might be slightly biased of course. Most helpful away from home base: Yarmouth IOW, they never fail to be cheerful and went out of their way to help when my boat was bumped last October.

QHM Portsmouth. Before you say 'why' it is because I keep my boat there. Creeping like flattery can get you anywhere.

Noted! And your boat's name is ? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

Llandwyn Island Harbourmaster is superb - he's miles away in Caernarvon!

Facilities; superb views - especially sunrise & set, sheltered in most wind directions. No moorings, restaurants, pubs, showers, toilets, trippers or gongoozelers! And no fees either.

That's my kind of harbour! Wouldn't want to leave a boat there tho' coz the nearest road is 2-3miles walk away.

Plymouth Mass. HM was really nice to me when I was there. Sent a boat out to escort us in and arranged for a boat to ferry us across to the yacht club as there were no shower facilities near the dock we had to berth on. (2.8m draught didn't help!) Mind you its a bit of a cheat when you have a very English accent and point out you are from Plymouth UK on the radio when you call in!!!

We went there twice last year - first rate place to visit. We were flying the Duster and all the boats waved to us on the way in without fail (felt a bit of a fraud though 'cos we'd only sailed up from the Chesapeake). Used the PYC moorings and taxi - incredibly friendly club, highly recommended. We used to live and work in Plymouth UK as well so this became a talking point. They mentioned that a guy from Plymuff had visited before us and had sent them a yacht club shield - was it you? It was mounted on the wall behind the bar where we were talking.

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

Delivered to our boat. I had to stop them climbing out of the pan whilst I boiled them alive though. Lost my appetite after that.

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

Bembridge IOW

Very helpful, put his team onbaord to help me raft up, was only our third trip and never done it before. Not good being the 6th boat out.

2nd vote is for Yarmouth IOW, didn't stay there because it was full, but the chap who comes out to greet you is very nice and welcoming. Am looking forward to berthing there this year.

Let me know when we do the worst and we can mention some at Cowes.

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

Cassis on the south coast of France. We phoned ahead and grovelled. He said he should be able to fit us in. VHF on arrival provided an escort to the last pontoon. Took lines from "Her in training" ( swimsuit helped i'm sure). Gave us bottled water, shopping bag , map of town and suggested restaurants supermarkets etc. We stayed five days and he said thankyou for us staying with them! Also brought his grandson down to meet "the nice English couple"( whoever they were!). People like this made our trip. Shame about the B£$%^&ds at Port Gallice...still, that's another nightmare.

[/ QUOTE ]Yes and that someone was me! I am glad that someone else has enjoyed themselves there. We had sailed up from the Chesapeake as well via Annapolis and NY (and originally from Bermuda) tough job sometimes...

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

Another vote for Yarmouth IOW, and not just 2006. I've been visiting for 30 years and never had anything but polite helpful assistance. Awesome how they manage to squeeze us all in
