LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

It would be good to hear all your nominations for most helpful harbour masters 2006.

This is the help desk at Annapolis Harbor Master's Office.

In fairness he did give us unlimited tokens for the heads and showers.

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

The harbourmaster at Shotley has a handgrenade on the desk with a number on a sheet of paper under the pin. The sign says "Complaints Department - please take a number".

Very helpful - rescued my detached fender from the lock gate. You don't need fenders as the lock has rubber sides and they just pull your fenders off if you're not careful.

QHM Portsmouth. Before you say 'why' it is because I keep my boat there. Creeping like flattery can get you anywhere.

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

I've heard that the Harbourmaster at Salcombe will be alongside the moment you arrive. Of course, he's there to collect your harbour dues before you do a flit, but he's making an effort. Which is nice. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

Gloucester, Massachussets.

Incredibly friendly and helpful guy, easy to talk to on VHF/mobile, came out to show us where to moor, told us about the town, gave us a welcome pack and told us to contact him if we ever needed anything. Best welcome we had I think.

Gloucester is a real, working fishing town and the industry is struggling a bit so they may be trying hard to diversify, but we really appreciated the reception we had and thoroughly enjoyed a "real" town and it's people. Lots of old schooners there too, they all go out in the evening which makes a great photo opportunity for irritating Brits in RIBs /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Oh, they filmed Perfect Storm there too, but the locals were apparently p*ssed off about it /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

Efficient, polite and always tries to squeeze you in if you arrive a bit late. Walk ashore pontoons are also great ( ducks and runs for cover from purists ) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

Brightlingsea. Meets you in launch, leads to berth and will jump on pontoon and take your lines. I got trapped by a strong on-pontoon wind when wedged between two much larger vessels - he come over and pulled me clear. 10/10

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

St Michaels, Maryland were pretty good.
On dock to take lines.
Choice of newspapers and reasonable bottle of wine on booking in, plus visitors guide to town, and buying round of drinks when off duty in the marina bar - spect he puts it on expenses.
One nice touch. The hoses on the fuel pumps will reach the full length of the pretty substantial visitors' pontoon so now need to move to fill up./forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

Second vote for Yarmouth.
Harbour master has always made a big effort and found space for me.
(inspite of the dreadful pontoons and the idiot Harbour commisioners..
(swats Pinnacle with a soggy bale of Oakum))

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

Just goes to show you can't please all of the peeps all of the time! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

River Yealm HM - first visit, new boat, inexperienced crew, little room. Lots of advice on tidal stream, escort to pontoon, stayed to check all fast. Back later for leisurely chat, take fees etc Amiable, laid back but efficient ........... the best way to be.

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

Neil and his lads in Penzance, always helpful, polite and fair with dues.

Re: LAST YEAR\'S MOST HELPFUL HARBOUR MASTERS

Yealm HM is pretty good. Always ready for a chat and super efficient without being officious and money grabbing.

If you don't mind the pose,

Plymouth Mass. HM was really nice to me when I was there. Sent a boat out to escort us in and arranged for a boat to ferry us across to the yacht club as there were no shower facilities near the dock we had to berth on. (2.8m draught didn't help!) Mind you its a bit of a cheat when you have a very English accent and point out you are from Plymouth UK on the radio when you call in!!!

Wells-next-the-sea

Will come right out to the fairway buoy to lead you in through shifting sandbanks that are not possible to mark.

And for people like me with poor memories he will take you back out again the next day !!!!
