Lanolin vs lanolin and extra hot chilli powder - the results

I have used grate blacking to good effect for the last two years. It no longer has lead in it but still seems to work. Bottom and prop were very clean this year but that may be partly due to two weeks in freshwater before lift out.

I tried getting some grate blacking following your recommendation in a previous thread but could'nt find any in the local diy places, where do you buy yours from?

My boat is only afloat for a few hours either side of high water & I have never seen barnacles like I have had this year.

Barnacles' normal habitat is the intertidal zone, so getting them on a boat that dries out is not surprising.

Your prop looks real clean, but then so does the hull.

How long were you in the water? Has the hull been washed down and if not what AF are you using.

Jonathan

We launched early May but were ashore for August. The photo was taken before pressure washing. This year we used Greek antifouling, don't remember its name, which has been very effective. It is highly eroding, its only drawback, meaning that even the slightest touch with hands or feet when swimming results in blue paint on the body.

Third successful season with Velox. This taken yesterday before pressure washing. Absolutely nothing on it, whereas in previous years it would have been heavily coated with tube worm. This is two coats on top of previously applied Hammerite primer, sanded down. Slight pitting of the top coat due to cavitation but much better that when i applied four coats as recommended. After three years I still have well over half a tin of velox left, so a pretty economical treatment.

Edit: P bracket also perfectly clean, compare with prop shaft in the background.

The Velox looks really effective but I can't see where to buy it in the UK. They don't seem to have a UK distributor which is a shame.

Three seasons of very effective use now.

It is available in UK here http://www.navigatorsmarine.co.uk/velox.php The testimonial mirrors our experience in that adhesion to the primer is not great, although I have used Hammerite special metals.

It looks expensive but my tin of the same size has at least three more seasons use in it.

That is very impressive. Thanks for taking the trouble to post those pictures and the link. The price is less than I was expecting so I feel an order coming on.

The biochemical in chillis that causes the heat is called capsaicin. It's an ingenious bit of evolution by the chilli plant to ensure that the fruit and hence the seeds are eaten by birds and not mammals, because it's birds that distribute the seeds in their droppings. For this to work the pain sensation is felt only by mammals - it's a response peculiar to the mammalian pain system - and not by other classes of animals. Therefor chilli in antifoul will be good at keeping dolphins, porpoises, whales, marine baboons and small children from attaching themselves to your hull or prop, but not anything else.

There's a regular in our local who only ever consumes red hot chili , superhot curries and vast quantities of beer. He reckons he's a mammal but I have had my doubts!

I've order some Velox Plus but Navigators Marine sell it through Marine Super Store which is where mine's coming from. I've persuaded another boat owner to try it so we are going halves on the 500ml tins. There should be plenty left over.

I use Trilux Prop-o-Drev but it's essential to apply the International primer first. Never have more than a little slime after 12 months. How old is your prop? It looks just like my Volvo which sheared its teeth at 3 years old. Suggest you look at the teeth where they engage at the fully open position.

The prop must be about 15 years old. I clean and inspect the teeth every year and they seem fine but I'll have a better look this year.

That's good news for you. 2 of us had the same problem with sheared teeth on this design/make of prop at 3 years old. Both props were bought in 2004. They may have come from a bad batch. They seemed to get through anodes in about 6 months indicating inferior metal. Volvo weren't interested unless we bought new blades for £330. I may go for a Flexofold next year.

Mine's a Radice and it doesn't have a separate anode. Some people have reported that the bushes on these give out but that's not a problem I've had .... yet.
