I am going to Lake Garda in Italy with my family in the summer and want to take my boat, a fifteen foot 60 h.p. speedboat. Does anyone have any info on permits, licences, launching areas, restrictions etc. or if you are even allowed to take speedboats onto the Lake. Any info, links etc. gratefully received.

Cheers

If you need a great B&B with private pool, secure parking, historic house at the south of the lake, please let me know.

I know you can hire boats at Gardamare and I'm sure you can launch your own. Have a look at www.gardalake.it
If you can't find the info your looking for let me know and I'll email my Sister she has been there severall times.

A few years ago I took my trailor boat down there. For convenience sake I kept her on a moorings in the yacht club of Stressa - for two weeks- no fee. There are plenty of launching slips and places to park yr trailor - the lake is well marked - where speed limits - buy your fuel on the Swiss side - much cheaper! Lots of interesting places/islands/shore side restaurants to visit - have fun!

Mind, Stresa is a town on Lake Maggiore, not Lake Garda.
Both lakes are very nice sailing places, L. Maggiore less windy, L. Garda wider and more sea-like, as can be seen comparing local traditional boats of the two.
But they are two different lakes.
Anyway a heartly welcome!
Sandro

p.s.: for an holiday tray to avoid the crowded august month.

Hi

I have enjoyed using a variety of sportsboats in Italy over the last few years, including a gorgeous 1968 mahogany Rive Ariston on the Lakes. The documentation you needis as follows:

International Helmsmans Certificate
SSR registration document
3rd party insurance certificate with Italian translation
VAT invoice or Bill of Sale for boat
Passports for all on board

The boat must fly a suitable UK flag/red ensign. This can help avoid being stopped, as the Italian Police/Carabinieri/Finanza/Coast Guard etc tend to prefer to pick on the poor Italians! On busy summer weekends it's quite common to be stopped and asked for your Papers - I have never had a problem when carrying all the above.

They will usually leave you alone, but they do get very irritated by motorboats using their engines within 500 metres of bathing areas, or going too fast near the shore.

You should have a meal at La Lepre in Desenzano - it's superb....

I collected some information on Lake Garda.
Power boats are allowed, except in an area about 3 NM in legth at the north end.
Motoring is forbidden within 300 metre from shore (150 metre in some areas), except when landing and leaving at 3 KN.
he overall speed limit is 20 KN by day and 5 KN by night.
Many more details you can have from the local marina or boatyard you probably will use for launching.
Hope to have been useful,
Good wind - oops, pardon, lots of petrol,
Sandro

Don't need a International Helmsmans Certificate (or any) if boat is on UK flag. What you do need (if you don't have the certificate) by law -but no-one has ever asked me or anyone I know for it during my 5 years keeping boat in Italy- is a certificate from a consulate (try Mike Bourgonne from British Consulate in Naples) stating that UK law does not require you to have any certificate.
Having read that I've just remembered that under Italian law any motor boat under 7.5 metres (soon to increase to 10m) and 40hp doesn't need any certificate. Would this Italian law apply to UK registered boats ? Not sure but I bet the local Carabiniere don't either.

Lake arda

Hello, don't know if you will get this, I am replying to a very old post. My son is getting married near Lake Garda in September and I have just seen your offer of B & B. We have booked a hotel for a week, but have decided to stay an extra week, - do you still do B & B? Also, do you know where I can charter a sailboat? Nothing fancy, 32 Bavaria or similar. Many thanks, Malcolm

Old post, but since it has resurfaced better to clarify.

You confused Lake Maggiore (where Stresa is "one soft S only") that has Switzerland on the North end, with Lake Garda which is the second lake to the East from Maggiore and it is all in Italy.

Better trying a PM to the poster about B&B it would be easy to miss your question.
