Just heard over the weekend that Lady Isle (off Troon) claimed another "grounding" victim a couple of weeks ago. Seems it is becoming a popular place to run aground but for the life of me I cannot figure out why. I mean it is big enough to see and even has a light on it and the rocks and shallows around it are well charted and known to the locals.

I didn't get too much info just someone in a race was trying to get their spinaker up and grounded on the rocks (not looking what they were doing I suppose, either that or too absorbed in winning a race). Seems they managed to float them selves off by heeling the boat well over to lift the keel of the rocks so the lifeboat was not called out.

Anyone have any more info on the incident? was it someone from the sailing club or from the marina? or a stranger to the area (which sounds more likely). Was the boat badly damaged? I imagine it would have been if they were racing unless they were going slowly faffin' about with the spinaker.

The grounding that I always remember was many, many, many years ago when two couples in a MoBo were coming back from Arran and having set the autohelm for Troon went below for....... Anyway the boat drifted a little south of the intended course and ran aground at full speed up onto Lady Isle - the ultimate "coitus interruptus" - guess the earth really did move...... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If they were racing, they certainly would not be the first boat to go rock hopping on a foul tide to maximise their VMG. Prudent seamanship seems to go out the window when some people put their racing head on.

As one who comes in less than once a year (i.e., I'm a stranger to the place) and almost always at night, I can say that all of Troon's lights - even, or especially(?), Lady Isle - are absolutely bloody awful against the shore lights, and totally useless if it's raining. And generally, you're piling in on horrible lee-shore too.

It's a place where I'm more conscious than usual that I might not be where I think I am, even though this has never turned out to be the case.

My recollection is that the light on Lady Isle is extremely weak given its important location, or have I been unlucky?

Hi Cliff,

Spent enough time in my RNLI days at Troon pulling silly bu ggers off the Island.......with that knowledge I think I know the dangers better than most, its only fair then I should seek refuge on the top of the "Scart" rock in an attempt to let the rest of the racing pack get away...!!!!! What I will say as always is no matter how much experiance you have you will never stop learning.........what's this talk about lifeboat...don't think so, No damage just my pride....the main thing is I am happy to publicise it with the hope others may learn from......anyway thought Simon would have given you all the gen!!!

Take care

Paul.

Paul, shame on you leaving all that lead smeared over the rocks waiting to poison a few fishes or what ever. Hope you went back and cleaned up after your "encounter".
Glad to hear there was no real damage - just your pride - don't let it get to you, I think we all have had a few "encounters" from time to time if the truth was told like running aground in the Crinan canal (#2 sprog suspended from the boom to heel her over enough to get free of the mud - good job there was no tide) or getting caught off Hunterston at low water (lower than I thought) or even giving the odd bouy a wee "love kiss".

Nice to know I am not the only one has little "encounters".

BTW the beer is still in the fridge if you are around this weekend

Yes a little tight behind the back of the pontoons, just back from doing a job at Ardrossan marina but could not remembere the name of your boat.......will catch you soon.

Paul.

Thanks Cliff, will take you up on the offer of beer soon...........what's this I hear 2 Sadler 34's were in collision off Irvine at the weekend......what's the news, any damage??? I believe a pop rivet gun was to blame!!!!

Paul.

Wasnae me!

Seems Simon was thumped by another S34 out of Troon. The other S34 was being helmed by a well well known RYA instructor / examiner at the time of impact. Something to do with the other S34's skipper needing to borrow a pop rivit gun so decided to do it off Irvine while Simon was heading back to Troon. Not so much damage as for as I know - more a wee "love kiss between bussom buddies" Some confusion over who was the stand on vessel although Simpon was under sail and the other was motoring! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Simon can give you more details

Before anymore S26's are conceived, you'd better get some boat condoms. You know the things, they sometimes use them to snuff spinnakers /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
