La Coruna

Hi everyone,

We are crossing Biscay next month, but unfortunately will have to return to the UK for a few weeks to work. Does anyone know or can recomend cheap/safe marinas around La Coruna to leave the boat for upto a month?

La Coruna or maybe upto 100miles south would probably be OK.

I posted this on scuttlebutt too but hope I'll get more response here!

I left my boat on a mooring in Corunna for a few months quite a long time ago now.
I'm sure there's a marina now. You could head down to Bayonna which is more picturesque.

the marina in la coruna itself is pretty basic, not cheap and not secure.

the new one at sangenjo further south has more space and wasn't as expensive when we were there.

there is a NEW marina in the old fishing dock in LA CORUNA which is well sheltered and appears to be secure although other posts here suggest otherwise.

I have used La coruna for deliverie pickup and dropoffs, crew changes and as a start/stop point for BISCAY crossings.

Vego has a secure marina. I would recommend BAYONA - very nice, secure and very very helpfull but it can get full with people leaving boats there in the winter.

With so many people taking their boats down that coast many places are filling up and prices are rising......

There are several yacht clubs with marinas in the SPANISH ria's between LA CORUNA and BAYONA where you may be able to leave your boat. If you do not speak Spanish then i wouold think that the best bet would be to turn up, ask and take your chances.....

vianna de costello in portugal is very cheap much better than spain if you can get that far. sada up one of the ria's near la coruna is secure but not too cheap and if you want to stay more than a week you have to pay for the year. i know of someone who got a mooring bouy there for a month for next to nothing tho and it is very sheltered.

Vianna is good, but not so cheap. Good security and an excellent sardine BBQ with all you can eat and drink for 7 euros at the local sports cafe just up the road. They do cheap deal outside high season, but it was costing us 22 euros per night in May. This compare to 10 euros at other places, e.g. Vivero. Of course weekly rate is a little cheaper, and it is possible to get a monthly rate other than in July/Aug at most places.

Try going down to the ria d'arosa to Vilagarcia - near to international airport at Santiago.

email marinavilagarcia@marinavilagarcia.com for prices and availability. This is a good sheltered marina. - bit near the industiral side, but ok. usefully close top airport, but make sure you book return tickets - one way charges are totally prohibative!!!!

My husband (and the boat..) are in Coruna as I speak. He says the marina has spaces, looks OK but he has picked up a strong sturdy mooring at the 'old' anchorage, 10 yards from the YC pontoons and says they say he can use it as long as he likes - no mention of cash!! He's moving on today towards the Algarve.

Further south, Nazaré in Portugal is a cheap and well secured marina; and the harbour master of the marina is english and he is very helpfull.

is dirty, expensive and the marina is in a notable state of disrepair. The town is very engaging and great fun.

Far better are the following:-

1. Viviero - 43deg 40'.8N 07deg36'W. New, well-nigh deserted marina, tucked up a ria, past the fishing harbour. Cheap and safe, use the coast railway to get to civilisation. Notably swell-free and outstandingly well-protected. Inhabitants mainly locals with a few visiting French.

2. Marina Sada - 43deg 22'N 08deg 15'W, allegedly the best marina in Galicia, within striking distance of la Coruna and infinitely preferable and cleaner.

Nazaré is a hell of a long way from la Coruna and, tho' Mike is good fun the marina is minute and the only travel access is via (fairly expensive0 taxi to Lisboa. It is, comparatively expensive (Brits with their S coast of UK price expectations are godd for a rip off all round mainland European coasts).

Besides the Rias Biaxas deserve a good long visit - in my opinion vying with W Scotland as one of Europe's greatest cruising areas. Don't to pass up the opportunity to really explore them. I only spent 5 weeks there, which was totally inadequate to do them justice.
