Knowlegable or opinionated

I think you make an interesting point which draws attention to human nature. I believe that when you put some people in a situation where the consequences for poor behaviour are relatively minor then many of their inhibitions disappear and some of us behave badly as a result.

Two examples of this are car drivers and forumites, both groups are protected by anonymity not enjoyed in other walks of life where they behave very differently.

Turning to the opinionated; this is quite a different habit, perhaps prompted by the desire to show off, who knows? I have to say that the people who worry me the most are those that state opinion as fact, sometimes wrongly.

I have received invaluable advice on this forum that has saved me many hours of hard work. I have also seen products, services and sailing practices condemned, out of hand, with little in the way of explanation when I have experiences of the same products/services/practices that are very positive.

In the end of course, your forum ID carries with it a reputation based on the sum total of your contributions. Having been around for a couple of years, I now have formed an opinion about whose opinions carry weight and whose don't.

In that respect the forum is bit like real life, only a bit less restrained. Sadly there will always be the selfish idiot that parks his car in the disabled spot, but most of us don't. Similarly we can ignore those lacking empathy on these forums, because most of us will help if we can.

All in all, I think the forums are great, I appreciate YBW for hosting them and all the valuable and humorous contributions forumites have made over the years.

Sometimes when wrestling with a rusty piece of equipment that just won't budge or a blocked heads that won't unblock, a word of friendly advice over the ether from someone who "has been there and done that" can make all the difference /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Long may they continue!

One of the things that irritates me are the Serial Googlers.
You can generally spot their contributions because of the formulaic language that just reeks of cut and paste.
A bit like smokers who can't figure out how anyone knows they smoke.

I have to second Richardabeattie's gripe. If you want to know or say something, make the title reflect the content.
I just don't bother with the obscure any more, and may just have had the answer...

All human life is here, the opinionated, the surly, the happy, the rude, the fat, the thin etc. No point in pontificating about it - you just have to accept that there will be people who get up your nose as well as those who help and those (like me /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif ) who have to post whether they have something worthwhile to say or not. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'd also like to add that I find it useful when a number of posters answer the same question - even if they give the same answer that other posters have given. This is one of the things that helps me form a decision when I don't know the credentials of the respondents. I agree there are people on here who (in my view) sometimes talk utter cobblers - and with great conviction too! If I get several plausible-sounding answers, it's sometimes "weight of numbers" that helps me reach a decision.

If I have a beef relating to your point it's that the tag lines many posters use are boring after the first exposure, and rank aggravating on the 100 th ! But they keep on, seemingly in the belief it adds reinforcement to their contribution, when of course it detracts. Some self sensorship would be advantageous.

[/ QUOTE ] Whoops - I've had the same tag line for ages. Of course we all like to think that we are offering pearls of wisdom, but perhaps I'd better edit my tag line in the meantime...?

Two problems I see:

1/ put 2 expterts in their field together and there will be quite a bit they disagree on. Therefore experts can be wrong as well. Add the 'dickhead' therefore can be superfluous, but can also mean that better information is dug out.

2/ put 2 people in a room, and the expert is the one who has had more experience of a subject than the other. So it may be that you answer a thread since you think you know the answr, only to find that the next poster comes in with more/different/better knowledge than you and corrects you. This may be humbling, but very healthy.

In My veiw, the forums should be a source of constructive information and advice, not a messenger service nor a place of ridicule or insults

Absolutely agree with that. The PM facility is there for personal messages and theres no such thing as a stupid question in my opinion.

Its a great shame that beginners to boating may be discouraged from using the forums by dickheads with smart arse answers.

I have been following posts on these forums for a while now and whilst I dont proport to be the font of all knowledge, there are surly some dicks who show their heads from time to time.

[/ QUOTE ]Sorry, I thought I was safe to post here as a safe haven from the lounge, obviously bad feeling has followed me to PBO. I will refrain totally from any future posts. Far too many people trying to control the rest of us on these fora.
