Where did I put that slide rule?

Nautical mile, statute mile, knots... I feel like I'm reading the back of a 1960s exercise book. Anyone remember them? Chain, perch, furlong. A cable, by the way, is uncannily close to a furlong. Perhaps that's why people say there are white horses in the sea. They never mentioned bloody kilometers either. Troy, avoirdupois... phew.

1 nautical mile is the angular distance of 1 minute of arc on the earth's surface, so is it longer at high tide? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I seem to recall that the original "mile" was a Roman decimal (or metric) measure - 1,000 paces. However, the Romans counted a pace as a double pace. So, how long was the Roman pace, and hence mile?

This might add a whole new insight to your problem.

For any such calculation, with my very simple mind, I just add 10% "plus a bit", to get to as near an accurate a conversion as I'll ever need. So, 44 knots + 4.4 = 48.4 + a bit = 50 mph. Simple isn't it??
