Knockoff Power Tools

Just bought the genuine Matika 18v version to use with my batteries. Screwfix have an offer which was enough to tip me over the edge.
I think it was the post from @Blueboatman that made me go for the genuine one.

Thanks guys
If you’ll excuse the pedantry, the “genuine” one is made by Fein. He (Fein) invented the multitool.

No I won't excuse the pedantry. The phrase you take issue with isn't 'genuine multitool', it's 'genuine Makita' as opposed to E-bay chinese copy of a Makita.

Good luck with the boat job now👍

Makita will have a 3 year warranty

And you may find if you’re no longer using it in a couple of years time that you can sell it on here for Makita price minus the price of the lesser knock off tool.

Don't forget the good old pad saw. Fit a blade of your choice for cutting or scraping.

Thid is a kind of hand/ pad saw I find very useful and some times better than a jig saw

I need an oscillating cutting power tool. I want one that will work with my 18v batteries but the branded one is over £100. I literally need it to do one job so don’t want to spend a fortune.
I’ve seen replicas for sale at under £30 new, what’s people’s thoughts?

Then go for the cheapie. It'll do the job fine.

You'll probably use it more then once, but it sounds like it'll only get light use.

Is there a minimum class weight with all this sanding?
(Sort of tongue in cheek question )
Well, yes. This tends to be sanding of a series of boats rather than the same one over and over. There’s also a minimum thickness of all sorts of parts. And light boats are even more prone to the death roll downwind. Therefore I have not so far been tempted to use a belt sander on a boat.

Interesting
I’ve watched Xs enough and someone in my family had one for a while too out of Itchenor
But I’ve never sailed one myself
No wonder you like jumping from one hull to three and back .

I guess a really bad death roll would make the X the Ex .
Coat, hat, gone 💨💨

Sorry I am a bit late to this thread but I bought a Fein corded multi-tool 10 years ago. Initially I hardly used it, then the penny dropped as I kept finding interesting jobs it could do better than any other power tool. During the renovation of Concerto, the multi-tool became the most used power tool. The secret was the vast assortment of accessories you could acquire. The rubber shaped profile sanding set I was told was created by one of the British motorboat builders. Wonderful addition to sand in difficult places.

Profile sanding set | FEIN Industrial Power Tools U.K. Ltd.

I have used mine for sanding everything from wood, to gel coat and smoothing gel coat filler, intricate compounding and polishing, sawing wood and metal. I have bags full of accessories as I never know when I will next use it. Also used it at home on a number of jobs (when I remember to take it home).

The Fein "Starlock " attachments fit some other brands - I think it's Bosch and (some?) Makita that are compatible.

The multitool (most power tools) does not have to be cordless. A cord gets you more power, more endurance, less weight, less bulk, and less cost. You don't have to choose one brand and share batteries, or have a whole stack of batteries so you can keep charging them, or to avoid swapping between tools.

Cordless drill, yes, I have several. Other tools? I don't get it for most power tools.

In Edinburgh there is a volunteer/donation based tool library that mostly avoids this situation. Tenner a year concessionary rate.

There have to be some compensations for the weather.

Most tools are only used for a short period so batteries are fine. Sanders is where I prefer mains as they do seem to be used for longer periods.

I've got the bosch 18v power for all system. Recently purchased a spare battery. Physically it is the same size as an older battery but 75% more power.
