Over the years we have all got used to the quality of the classified ads copy disappearing down the drain as the publishers drive the wages closer & closer to the minimum wage, but September's YM has to be a classic.

Apart from the usual Bennetaeus, Twiser, Sigam 38 and even a Worrior , on page 194 we are all invited to Santro Pais (Mexico perhaps??) to sail yet another Benetue.

Surely IPC could feed the names of commonly used boats and places into its spell checker for the boys and girls in the typing pool?

Homely

One of our all time classics was Hunter In Parlour.

This is a long standing problem which has existed since all IPC classified ads teams were 'pooled'. YM Editorial has provided frequent lists of boats and common errors and for a while our editorial sub editors proof read the classified copy. But this was just too time consuming to be sustainable.

Warning, rant approaching

Just to put my journo oar in for a second here, it has always irritated the f**k out of me when subs (sometimes including myself) spend hours making the editorial pages look beautiful only to have them surrounded by display adds with spelling and layout that would shame a five-year-old child.

There. That's off my chest now.

I bet your boys and girls just loved the suggestion that they should proof the classifieds...

Not a New Problem

In YM in the late 1970s a personal ad. appeared from a young lady who intended to say "seeks crewing position." Unfortuately the second "s" and the space were transposed....

Not forgetting....

Whilst sitting at anchor after breakfast this morning, waiting for the rain to stop (don't we love British summers?) I happened to glance idly through the June YM which was lying around on the boat. One of the classified ads was for a boat whose equipment included a "calori fire".

...that on the spine of an issue of YM many moons ago, the title was spelt Yacthing Monthly.

Much laughter on the other IPC mags.
