On a passage from Brightlingsea to Harty Ferry I thought, as it was such a sparkling day, that I would go the long way round via Queenborough. I called up the Kingsferry bridge at long point and was politely informed that the bridge was closed because of trouble on the rail network. I wasn’t aware that the rail strikes may affect the operation of the bridge but be warned it can do.

On the previous recent strikes there have been NtMs about the strikes, mostly affecting night operation, but hadn’t seen anything for this weekend. However the hot weather has been affecting opening, and I did hear of incidences of this yesterday. Could be you were palmed off with a convenient excuse.

Why would a driver's strike affect the bridge? The "other" RMT action would, because the bridge operator will be Network Rail staff (as are signallers) rather than Train Operating Company...

Yes, there were two outages for the bridge on the two previous strikes. There were two Medway local notices for the earlier strikes but not for this weekend.

Movie filming to close Kingsferry Bridge & Sheppey Way for entire October weekend
Lights, camera, action! Filming for a large US feature movie will close Kingsferry Bridge and Sheppey Way for the final weekend in October. Kent Film Office have provided advance warning for the filming, which will see some of the Isle of Sheppey's connections to the mainland closed between 4am on Saturday 29 and 10pm on Sunday October 30.

Don't these rascals know Kingsferry is a crucial part of our weekend therapy??

do recall a water pump raising water from the sparkling waters of the Swale and the pump dumping the contents on the bridge deck to stop it jamming.
