Kingairloch moorings

Yep, the estates website announced that a while back, can't really blame them. Considering how close they were to Oban and Dallens bay they did not seem to get much use, perhaps the limited hours of the Boathouse restaurant was the problem?

I'm hoping that Bob Bradfield surveys the Loch when he has a moment, the Admiralty chart doesn't identify much decent anchoring ground. I hoped that maybe the estate would cut back the six moorings to maybe two but it seems that they've all gone. We went and anchored at Achadun Bay instead - nice spot there.

I fired off an email to Aggregate Industries, owners of Glensanda, suggesting that they may like to pick up the cost as a bit of local community involvement.

Kingairloch estate was owned by a branch of the family that developed the quarry business, not sure if either or both has changed hands since. I notice that the are now calling the boathouse a 'Bistro' and seem to be opening it only two days a week for coffee and lunches. Obviously trying to market their beef, venison and seafood through it has not worked out. Too remote for most passing tourist trade but it is a shame they have not generated more support.

Both have changed hands I believe. I expect my email will be ignored, but sometimes big corporations who make a bit of a mess of the local environment like to have a diversity of small local community involvements.

Its a bit of a Catch 22, I want the mooring to be free when I get there but I also want it to be used enough to justify its upkeep, similar situation locally with the Crinan Canal, insufficent use leading to eventual abandonment.

WE have anchored without difficulty at the head of the loch. It shelves in quite steeply so, from memory, it would usually be in about 10m CD. The bottom is mud and we and had no problems with holding. We generally anchor off the cottage on the south side.

Day before yesterday we anchored perfectly satisfactorily where we always used to before moorings. In about 7 metres off the stream about a cable east of the perch. Anchor set well. I had a tiny concern that some tackle might have been left on the bottom on taking the moorings out. If it was I didn't hook it. No mud on my anchor.

I prefer damp sand to anchor it, I don't need much depth & use all string so the shallower the better. Port Ramsay is a good alternative for me. Busy a couple of nights ago with 9 boats at anchor.

9 boats in Port Ramsay? I went in there a fortnight ago and thought it looked a bit tight for more than about half a dozen boats; was I wrong?
