I have got a Colvic Atlanta Ketch and will be changing the mizzen sail.Currently the foot of the sail slides into the boom (was once boom roller reef). The quote i have just had says 'loose footed' ..i assume this means only attached either end of boom (conventional). Would it be better to go for this method or are there any bits i may be missing??
 
The loose-footed sail will have a slug on the clue that will slide in the boom track, which will pick up the weight. Your outhaul will then just attach to this.

It should work fine assuming you have now changed to slab reefing.
 
That may be the problem as currently there is no out haul on the mizzen boom.It is slab reefing now though so it could be permanently attached....its only the mizzen afterall.I was really wondering if the sail shape is better loose footed?
 
Would have thought sail shape best with rope foot (or slugs I suppose). Also spreads the load.

Maybe worth talking it through with your sailmaker.
 
15 years with a ketch , but while the main was loose footed, with an outhaul to allow adjustment of fullness/shape, the mizzen remained attached to the boom. Must admit that if it was blowing enough to reef the mizzen, it came down!, on the other hand if it blew a bit more then the main came down and the mizzen went back up! Working jib & mizzen good for a 7, going to windward.HTH
 
Loose footed allows easier foot adjustment, but how much do you adjust the mizzen foot anyway? I'd go loose regardless, as much more options for lazyjacks, boombags etc, and can't really imagine that the mizzen boom provides any endplate effect to efficiency.
