Keep Turning Left.

I've been reading this thread on and off and find I am not a minority of one, but still part of a small minority.

I really cannot be bothered watching any sailing videos, I'm bored to tears. But I really have little interest in watching most sport on television. I'd rather be out there sailing, not watching someone else. Rather than watch videos I find I have plenty of other diversions - without 'being' entertained (and Australian TV is not part of entertainment!).

But then I have always wondered of the popularity of Go-Pros - great feats of technology (the cameras) but I do have to wonder who watches the product.

Maybe its one of my personality defects.

However - I have made 'instructional' video and I have a slight appreciation of the effort he might have put into filming and the incredibly efforts needed to edit. People enjoy his work, obviously - all credit to him. But not for me. I have looked at a few minutes of Dylan's work and lost interest, I have watched, maybe 3, of Halcyon's videos right through - that's it.

Fully support the above.
Never understood why some were set against DW, he produces beautiful films (or should I say produced as he may not be doing anymore after this lot).

In any group of mainly old men there will be some against absolutely everything. Except themselves of course.

I arranged for Dylan to come to Medway Yacht Club in January this year and show a selection of his KTL films with some chat between.

It was sold out without advertising and if I'm honest he gave Tom Cunliffe (a previous guest who must surely be the funniest nautical after dinner speaker around) a run for his money for laughs that evening.

I received many compliments from the members regarding the evening and the quality of his films.

But of course they were all prepared to pay to watch and listen to him.

This is just a circular discussion, the thread is achieving nothing. Some like his films, some do not, some like his style, some do not, some want to pay, some don't.

I honestly can't see what the point of the thread is anymore.

Ah kind Sir, Victor speaks for generations that have experienced better in life plus know a thing or two, so rejoice at Victor's remarks upon those less fortunate than him or us

Seems very cultural, go cruising - lots of brits (and other northern europeans) can't half be a right bunch of whinging old gits about anything and everything compared to many, maybe down to the climate ;)

Humm well I am thankfully to this KTL thread again, the much earlier one, sometime ago all seemed most acrimionus so I did not understand the arguing etc etc. Since this newish thread I understand more about the KTL issues and appreciate his works so much that I have since made direct contact with DW about buying his DVDs etc. I am now a follower of his fashion, as one might say

Marks comment earlier got me looking around the web again for uk coastal vids, and I came across this couple.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fTR-vrhsi4

Found them quite interesting as they have a very similar old westerly to ours, so thought their fettling might be instructive. Found it even more interesting when I realised they were in m ilford haven, and I paused it where the access gangway to the pontoons showed in the background to show jo exactly where I had berthed our boat for the time being. Only to realise, that in that spot, was our boat! We hadn't noticed the vids were very recent affairs :)

So now, this is the second series that I have actually watched every episode, (the other was kudo), and while admittedly it was mainly for special interest, fettling problems on an old westerly, next door to our own, it did hold my interest just enough. I cant imagine it will get mainstream appeal, but who knows, once they get out sailing next season, a lot will depend on whether there is a visual interest and a story to hook us with. I will keep an eye on this channel tho. I did watch one of the teleport ones, and it looks potentially interesting, just haven't had time to go back and watch any more yet.
Theres a whole channel of these guys, living with the tide, which I had hopes for as they started in Oban I believe, but the one I found and watched was pretty tedious https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiJM-1-et38. Will try again with another episode of actual sailing and see if it gets any better, but not holding out much hope for this. Others may enjoy it tho, so good luck to them.

The Teleport films are the only ones I’ve seen that come close to KTL. Very strongly recommend them. They kept me well occupied a couple of winters ago. From their purchase of a cheap boat in Nova Scotia, it’s fitting out, shake down cruise through gales to Newfoundland and then sailing across to Alaska (over a few short seasons), they made some brilliant and beautiful films. They are all about 15 to 20 minutes long. Watch from the start!

... lots of snippage of other stuff I kind of agree with....

It was the combination of the strength of that attack plus the escalated demands to fund a bigger and better boat that put me and many others off. Bear in mind that this was a bloke who had a better house than I could afford and keeping his boat in a more expensive marina than I can afford who wanted me to fund his hobby. That's when I said I'm out.

Yeah.. me too... I was a fan of the v1 era (as JD very cleverly described it) much simpler, and more sailing orientated, and more personal..

Kind of put off by the increasing number of opinions... around about the Solent video's as those are my home waters and it grated a bit... also I'm not sure I believe the "i'm skint and can't go sailing" angle when he lives in such a lovely house and can afford to drop several hundred on a new home build electric bike?

Whatever - lots of other YouTuber's to watch... i'm intrigued by the pub review vids mentioned... :D

But surely the only important thing is whether or not you find the films rewarding and interesting. I certainly do and really couldn't care less about DW's financial situation or anything other than my enjoyment of the KTL films. If I come across films I don't like (most of them on youtube I am afraid) I just stop watching, which is the prerogative of us all. I must confess that not all the KTL films are to my liking so I stop watching and certainly do not 'tap'. On the other hand if I feel a film really entertains me then I have no problem in donating a little dosh in thanks. I started this post purely to mention a couple of newer films that I thought were especially good but most of the thread seems to have reverted to the examination of DW and his methods rather than the quality of the films originally mentioned.....very good films imo.

Oh I tapped for the Solent one's - even with the 'commentary' it was well worth it, but they are my home waters, and there was a level of personal interest/involvement.. the Scottish/Essex/Norfolk one's I'm not so bothered about to be honest as there isn't the same level of 'involvedness' to get me through the commentary... but as someone said 8 posts ago - the thread is now fairly circular as you either like them or you don't, you either donate or you don't, but either way you're right... :encouragement:
