Dear all,
The sun is shining, the day's are getting longer, it's that time of year again when I wish I had more opportunities to go sailing.
Shift work means I get very few weekends off, about 2 every 5 weeks, and prevents me from taking part in the regular weekend cruiser racing that I used to enjoy. However, every 3 or 4 days I do get 2 or 3 days off work, so I can be available for mid week day sails or overnights on a fairly regular basis, with occasional weekend availability for a skipper who is flexible re the days they go sailing. With longer notice I'm fully prepared to use annual leave and shift swaps to make longer cruises of several days or more, dependent on me getting the time off work.
I am hoping to make contact with a friendly, encouraging, flexible skipper within a reasonable travelling time of my home in SE England, to get my sailing back up to speed, develop my own knowledge and ability, and hopefully provide you with a keen and reliable crew member to bolster your crew pool. Short term opportunities for day sails/short cruises welcome, I'd be especially pleased to build an ongoing relationship with someone with ambitions for longer trips in the future.
I'm 36 years old, non smoker, easy to get on with, and I enjoy spending time with people of all ages/backgrounds. I have my own gear including inshore/offshore waterproofs and quality life jacket. 1500 miles logged mostly on tall ships, more recently round the cans racing with some offshore and night passages (but not for some time). I've never stood a watch on my own at night. I have sailed two handed for round the cans racing. I have acted as a watch leader for a group of trainees when I was younger, reporting to a Watch Officer. That was mainly about herding everyone from one place to the other and making sure they didn't fall out of the rigging, it did not involve any responsibility for navigation. Currently studying for my Day Skipper theory correspondence course, opportunities to put into practice what I am learning would be welcome. I have sailed in most positions on a 28 foot cruiser racer including spinnaker work but not much helm experience. I'd describe myself as rusty after a couple of years non sailing due work but I'm a quick learner with a sound base of knowledge and experience and I'm confident I can soon get back up to speed and make a worthwhile contribution to your time on the water.
And I do make a nice cup of tea!
Hope to hear from you.
Rich
