Just been ripping the paint off my keel to get at some persistent rust patches. There seems to have been a red primer used and I wondered what it is. Is Primocon red?
IF SHE IS AN OLD UN THEN IT COULD BE "RED LEAD". THIS STUFF WAS WIDELY USED AND SIMPLY AN IRON OXIDE PRIMER AND CONTAINED NO LEAD! rUST PATCHES HAVE BEEN DISCUSSED A LOT ON THE FORUM IN THE PAST. mY OWN SOLUTION IS QUICK AND DIRTY - GET THE LOOSE STUFF OFF WITH A WIRE BRUSH (WEARING A GOOD BREATHING MASK) NEUTRALISE WITH "KU RUST" WHICH TURNS THE RUST TO AN INACTIVE PRIMED SURFACE AND THEN PAINT OVER WITH ANTIFOUL. Each keel takes about a 90ml bottle of KU RUST which comes from the car spares shop. After 25 years of this the keels are still sound but not very smooth.

I paint my lifting keel with red oxide primer. Needs redoing every couple of years. By coincidence I put the first coat on today. After jet washing I use a rotary wire brush in a drill to scratch the old paint to provide a key for the new coats.
Personally I just put more red oxide on but Im sure theres probably something better .With a lifting keel whatever you use is going to get scraped and worn off so i redo it regullarilly.
