Dear all

Looking for recommendations for a kedge/secondary anchor tackle for a 26ft westerly centaur. Anchor type and weight and rode?

Many thanks

Where do you sail?

If you have a lot of stony or weedy anchorage then the following mightn't apply -

But the standard suggestion would be a Fortress, which (I understand turn up fairly regularly on eBay) are light and pack flat - in the bilge or hung on the transom, (or in a cardboard box, disassembled), or can be packed in a neat home made bag, which Zoidberg might describe later.

And for weed or stony anchorages I might suggest a Kobra, which have favourable comment from those that actually use one (and with which I would agree) and is competitively priced.

Personally I don't like the idea of 'a secondary anchor' - you might lose your primary - so I prefer all my 'other' anchors to be as good as the primary (but I do carry a cross section of designs).

I’d use a Fortress FX-11 with 5m of 6 or 8 mm chain and 12 mm octoplait of a length to suit your sailing area (https://jimmygreen.com/anchors/24-fortress-anchor). If you’re feeling a little frugal, then go for the Guardian, the economy version of the anchor using the same rode: the G-11 is suggested for your boat size (https://jimmygreen.com/anchors/25-guardian-anchor).
We’ve been using a larger Guardian for years now as our kedge/spare anchor. It great, bites and holds well on most bottoms and is very light to handle. Putting it and the rode into the dinghy to put it out is easy: we previously had a steel danforthish kedge which was a finger eater and a pain to use and stow.

On my last few boats (27') I've had a 10kg CQR, a 10kg Delta and a 10kg Bruce.

My favourite here in the Solent and surrounding harbours was the Bruce, followed by the Delta. They both seem to reset themselves at the change of tide and I'd consider them good for both bower and kedge anchor.

I'd also consider a Danforth, Fortress or Britany anchor for a kedge, but I'd still want to keep it the correct weight for the boat rather than making it a lighter 'lunch hook'. (yes, even for the Fortress)

If money were no object I'd go for a Knox or a Rocna, (in that order) but otherwise the bottom where you anchor should dictate what type of anchor you use. If it's lumps of rock then consider a folding Fisherman or grapnel.

My main rode is 30m of 8mm chain followed by 12mm rope. The kedge rode is 5m of 8mm chain, kept seperate from the anchor as it make it all lighter to get into the cockpit.

Enjoy your anchoring...
