What would members suggest as a suitable weight of anchor for a 24 foot boat with an approximate weight of 3.75 tons? Bower anchor is a 20 lb CQR with chain.

I would look for a Fisherman (if you can find a good shape one) of around 20-25lbs. The reason I say this is that it holds in the few places where the CQR does not (weed, rock) and does not need a length of chain to help it set.

Otherwise, do as I do, and have two CQRs... I would suggest a 15lb one in that case. I once chucked a 15lb CQR kedge over, in a bit of a crisis, and it held like anything.

[/ QUOTE ]10Kg as primary, 6Kg as kedge/stern/spare... but if you are looking for a secondary anchor, on a small boat perhaps you should be considering a light-weight design, in which case the weight is not the defining attribute.

Or if you are looking for an extra anchor because you're unhappy with your bower, then relegate the CQR to secondary status and find something better to replace it.

Thank you gentlemen. Most useful. The existing bower has always performed fine but currently trawling ebay to replace totally inadequate kedge, which would look out of place on a dinghy!
