Hi guys - thanks for the replies.
Yes, am slowly getting the impression pricing should appear on the website. My next actions are to figure out the best way of achieving this without setting wrong expectations.

** Edit ** My apologies to Joe, it was wrong of me to refer to a comment which was made during an E-mail conversation on a public forum. This is something which I should have approached Joe about in private. So my apologies to Joe for overstepping a line. Additionally, I won't be posting what was said.

As one of the critics of the lack of pricing, which has only been in the interest of providing some feedback to Toby and Piers, i think the situation has been handled relatively well enough. There has been much reluctance to add some pricing info, but at least Toby has taken the "criticism" onboard and taken it for what it was meant to be. Even if he has been slow to accept that we're right :D

He has accused me, on a public forum, of swearing at him. This is not the case. I get the feeling he's becoming frustrated at the criticism he's received.

Interesting thread about something that has been on my to-do list for a while.

Some questions for Toby/Piers:

Is there a dB limit for horns by size of boat? ie could I put an S-330 on a 16' runabout legally?

Can you sell a compressor separately?

I have a 40' 1905 vessel running 12 volts (at the moment) and have an old, possibly ex-locomotive horn that I would like to install once I have completed some structural work. I did buy a cheap compressor for it a few years ago but found your site interesting for more professional alternatives.

Would I need any other kit?

Hi Forbsie. I've been away for last fortnight and have just started to see where this long thread has been going. Interesting indeed, and I see my son, Toby (GrootT) has been doing a sterling job.

OK, to answer your points in turn.

"Is there a dB limit for horns by size of boat?"

Yes. There are four different Classes of vessels, each depending upon loa. Each class defines the min dB (and frequency max and min). Details are here http://kahlenberg.co.uk/attachments/article/22/IMO-Requirements-Sound-Signalling-Kahlenberg-UK.pdf

"could I put an S-330 on a 16' runabout legally...?"

The S330 is a Class III horn and therefore certified for up to 75m loa! Technically I believe you can since below 12m all you need to be able to do is to make "a sound". This isn't detailed, so since the S330 produces 'a sound' maybe it would be OK - never been asked such a question before! However, I'd want to check with the MCA to see if you would be fooling others into thinking you were longer than 16' and therefore operating outside the rules - nice thought though! Bear in mind you'd need a decent battery, a compressor and an air receiver to drive the S330, which may not leave too much room to enjoy the boat....

"Can you sell a compressor separately?"

Yes, indeed. We have a huge range of compressors, air receivers and solenoids to meet many diverse needs. Solenoids include the old fashioned pull cord type seen in Mississippi paddle wheel steamers.

"I have a 40' 1905 vessel running 12 volts...."

OK, Your 1905 vessel falls into Class IV. We can handle either 12 or 24v DC, or mains at 110 or 230v AC. To be within the regs, you would need your loco horn tested for frequency and loudness which we could orgainse. However, it must be said that the cost of doing this would probably be more than the cost of a new trumpet assembly.

So can you put an S330 onto a 40' boat? Yes you can since the frequency is within the limits and the dB exceeds the minima.

Might I suggest that if you need further guidance that you call Toby? Number is on the website.

Thanks Piers, a great and detailed reply. I'm hoping to be back in the water at the end of the year, so I'll give Toby a call after then.

It is an ex-Naval Steam Pinnace and I'm positive that it's a sister ship to Vere as the hulls are identical but mine, unfortunately, seems to have been converted to houseboat use rather than a Gentleman's Yacht.

How gorgeous is that! I suggest a pull cord solenoid (as well as the push button) and maybe the horn finished in brass?

:D:D No! No! That's Vere, mine is much more basic, but I agree with your solution although a toilet flush cord maybe more appropriate. :D
