I was interested in fitting new horns and saw Kahlenberg horns at the boat show. The only problem is trying to get prices. It's as if it's a big secret and I don't have the password. 4 emails and still no prices.

Has anyone had any experience with them?

Do a search, Piers, a long time contributor on this forum is the dealer in question. I expect he was busy at the show.

Were those the big beauties that were sitting on the floor of one of the stands?
If so, they sure looked expensive!

It is a quite high end product and difficult to quote simply. You have choices as to which horn and how many, what finish, type of valve and compressor, type of control unit and how many controllers, etc. If you contact them through the website or here or whichever way is convenient they can make a proposal of the kit you'd need to make the installation you'd like and price it all out for you. They have all the data and know the product very well, and are very nice helpful+knowledgeable guys

I met Piers and Toby at the show, and they couldn't have been more charmingly helpful. There was absolutely no secret about the pricing - I was quoted the same as Andy59. Very straightforward. What happened when you saw them at the show - did they not give you the prices when you asked?

Cheers
Jimmy

No, no prices and I've had an email conversation this evening with them and still no prices.

Well, all I can say is that your experience was quite the opposite to mine. I'm slightly amazed that you've said to them 'how much is this horn' and they've said 'I'm not telling you' ... if that's what happened?

Cheers
Jimmy

I went to the stand, had a quote within 2 minutes for the smallest horn available with 2 options of air supply.... seemed a very helpful chap I spoke to, Piers was busy with another customer. I would just add that these are beautiful bits of kit....

Hi JoeQ,

Having returned from the 10 day Southampton Show, I have just read your posting and checked the email chain you have been having with Toby.

First, I must apologise that we haven't met your expectations. Second, I see you want us to send prices but with over 150 different leisure and commercial horns and over 1,000 options, trying to price something without knowing the details of the boat makes the task of sending pricing impossible.

I appreciate you don't want a telephone conversation so I will pick up on the email chain you have had with Toby so we don't use the forum as the means of communication. We are more than happy to send prices once we have details of the boat and the application.

Please feel free to use my mobile number below. Dialling 141 will, I believe, prevent your number being transmitted.

With best regards,

Piers

I sent an email to Kahlenberg at the weekend and got a call back from Toby yesterday afternoon.

Extremely pleasant, friendly and helpful person to talk to, I got a quote for the kit I was interested in there and then. It was much cheaper than I expected to be fair so I should be the proud owner of an S-0A horn very soon :)

I cant recommend them highly enough, thanks Piers/Toby

I visited the stand at he show, lovely product, had a chat with both Piers and Toby who commiserated about a recent 'Daka'esque incident I had with a dinghy racer in the Hamble.

Wish I'd had one of their horns to wake the dinghy pilot up a bit - he probably wouldn't have ploughed straight into me taking chunks of rub rail and gelcoat with him..

Just need to find space to fit one of their smallest trumpets on my little tub.

Thanks for all the comments. Can I just say that I was very impressed with the kit at the show and my post was in no way meant to criticise them, the person I spoke with at the show was very nice. I am still however waiting on prices.

I don't see why a company can't publish prices, Parker Hannifin who have thousands of products including Racor, publish a price list.

So why not just pick up the phone and speak to them? Surely far easier than emails to and fro.

I'm with you on the general price list point JoeQ. I know some businesses choose not to issue price lists, because they want to personalise the quote, but I always think they can do that anyway if i'm still interested after i've seen the price list. It may be that they're all too expensive anyway, so you don't need to waste your time or theirs, or it may be that the next one down to the product they've offered may be good enough and loads cheaper, or conversely for a bit of extra dough you can get a higher spec model. You don't know any of this if you don't have a price list.

Actually much easier by email.

Hi Joe,

In case you didn't receive the email I sent you at 7am this morning, if you can answer the following I can send you the appropriate options and prices. Maybe you are using a different email address today from that with which you have been communicating with Toby?

1. Boat length overall?
2. Leisure or commercial use?
3. Your preference of brass, chrome, powder coat white, or a specific RAL colour?
4. Single, twin, triple, and if over 20m loa, 4 or more trumpets?
5. Is compressed air is available? If so, at what pressure and capacity?
6. What voltages do you have whilst underway?

I see your profile says you have a Cheoy Lee 63. If this is the boat in question, you are close to moving from Class 4 to Class 3 (which happens at 20m), so the length overall (tip to toe) is a critical question.

Providing the above would reduce the options considerably and we should be able to move swiftly to a conclusion for you.

I'd prefer not to use the forum as a vehicle to sell since I believe it's against the rules. Please let me know the email address to which you would like me to respond. Feel free to PM or email me.

My email address and mobile numbers are below.

That might assume some sort of technical knowledge on behalf of the customer though , Nick. If you give me 20 pages of components, I wouldnt have any idea where to start.
