KAD44 Valve Clearances

I am sure you already know this but on the 44 and the kad300 this is one check you absolutely must do every 200 hours.

We regularly see Kad44 and 300's with between 400 and 1000 hours on them in Spain that have never had the valve clearances adjusted. I can't say that I've ever heard of any one having any valve problems here.
I'm not saying that they shouldn't be adjusted at 200 hours, just interested as to why people are having problems in other places...

Maybe it should be that they need to be CHECKED every 200 hours and adjusted if out of spec. If they never go out then fine. Maybe the 1000 hour boats were lucky. I know of one kad44 that went pop about 300 hours after being commissioned. Investigation revealed the valve gaps were out of spec and the servicing agent had not carried out the 200 hour check, which would almost certainly have saved the engine.

Acquired a kad300 twin set up with 125 hrs ,sold it with 825 hrs
The 200 hrs just came and went ,other jobs like the 5 y intercooler and cooler strip came up .
At about 400 + hrs I joined this forum ,and realised after a bit of googling that the Tappets had never been checked /adjusted .
There's no gasket on the rocker box and the fuel pipes are in the way( run over the top not inbetween) -so it a big job labour wise if done properly -removing the fuel pipes and rebleeding through etc .
Any how I insisted one year to the VP engineer ,he was not that enthausiastic say @ 480 hrs .
He told me they were all basically ok .
I could tell he had done the work the bolts were scratched and black sealant oozed out the rocker box .
Incidentally from then on they both has v minor weeps of oil --nowt serious ,just more cleaning needed now and agian -buy this time the water pumps seals were on there way out -dribbling , Elbows corroding and turbos were weakening
I sold it just in time passing these bills on to the next owner -not picked up in his survey
Anyhow I had a invioce for the work ,which the new buyer no dought via Internet was pleased to see .
But I never really went over 3000-3100 rpm tops ---wot was 3700 iirc .
I guess if you need and spend hours on end over 3500. Rpm then in my book you are canning it .Gonna knacker more than a rocker eventually !

Every 200 hrs is a bit keen , and like Aquatom the SoF VP guys aren't,t phased by this being passed over .

I'm not saying we don't check / adjust them. Just saying there are very many around the med that don't get checked and don't have any problems. We would check them inline with volvos schedule as it would be on our heads if any thing went wrong after we had serviced the engines.
