The oil pressure gauge our our boat is needle to the limit (with and without the engine running).

Unfortunately, we're away from our base so not as easy to get a mechanic.

Am I correct in thinking that there's a separate sensor that will sound the alarm if we have a genuine issue (until we manage to fix the pressure gauge or sensor)?

Thanks.

Yes, there are two sensors, on top of the oil filter assembly. One is a switch that checks there is oil pressure. The other is a pressure sensor that gives an output to the gauge. Sounds like you have a broken connection or dead sender to the gauge so have a look at the connections, take them on/off a few times, it might do the trick.

Otherwise as long as the oil pressure warning light goes off on the 4 warning light panel when the engine starts etc you have oil pressure and should be fine.

Thanks K, was hoping that was the case. Will wiggle wires in the morning!

It will surprise nobody (apart from Porto) that the gauge wasn't working due to the wire having come off at the back of the gauge.
wouldn't surprise anyone that has tinkered with these things. going straight to the MAX means the sense cable is broken, gnd and power obvs working :)

To be fair to Porto's diagnosis, your fault was caused by a LOT of resistance in the loom.

Quite .
I said on the other thread in passing - after sensor + gauge usual checks and or replacement ( usual meaning connectors ) then it’s the loom .
You know climbing the diagnostic tree , picking the easy fruit first .
Glad it was very low lying fruit on this occasion.
