KAD43 lagging port engine video

I'm sure you could buy a cheap pressure gauge kit on eBay but the way the revs build when the superchargers are in and then drop back when it cuts out says worn exhaust blades / housing of turbos.

Just remove the exhaust elbow check the gap if 2mm or more then that's your problem. Changed many of these now never need to check boost pressure just inspect turbo.

So back from the boat in stormy Spain and attach a pic of the offending turbo which is still on the boat.
Doesn't look good to me but what do you think? 400 hrs but 13 years old.
Just been quoted £185 + VAT for refurb from Midland Turbo which I think is OK.

Just as an aside, how much coolent should I drain off before taking the turbo off?
Cheers

Not the worst one I've seen but the gap is defiantly big enough to cause your problem. Best to check that they will replace the exhaust housing and turbine for that price as it sounds a bit cheap to me.

Drain off 7 or 8 litres if coolant should do it. There is a drain point in the bottom of the exhaust manifold near the turbo. If you drain it from there until it stops running then that's enough.

Thx for coming back ,often you never here what's happened after offering advice re engine stuff .
Refer to post #3 :) only because been there -tee shirt etc :)

I read somewhere on a US site they place a stainless steel liner to tighten up the gap .
What worries me @ that pic is the corrosion in front of the vanes .
Replacing vanes + assume new bearing is easy ,but the "iron " casing looks rotten .
Any how what's the other one like ?
It's not an hrs issues its a time sat when not used v near salt water in the riser .
Did you dare look down the riser ?
What state are the elbows -specifically the internal spray ring ?

I didn't look at the other one, I guess i should have to make a comparison. I'll recon both anyway.
Yes the water level in the riser is very close to the rubber joint hence very close to the turbine hence part of the problem.
Elbows look ok and I guess the spray ring is an internal component so will only see that on stripdown.
Thanks for your help thus far

Drain all coolant and do a coolant change as well, I've used Midland Turbo with very mixed results in past years, there local to me but they rebuilt me 2 and both units exploded dumping parts in the intercoolers.

For that price all you will get is a strip and clean up rebuild, I spoke to them 2 weeks ago and they could not supply any parts for your model as there currently out of production, in most cases on an ageing sterndrive derived turbo the main exhaust housing is scrap, don't let them or anyone talk you into making do with the housing, if the gap is more than 1 mm you will loose boost and performance, and use more fuel. My advise is buy an exchange unit .
Strangely I've been working on a Sealine recently bought from a Lincolnshire dealer which has had repairs carried out including a new turbo to try and rectify a power issue, it's turned out its absolutely nothing to do with the turbo, supercharger, etc. A very simple diagnostic that any good engineer would have found with 10 mins examination of the boats fuel system. Dare I say it another Sealine build cock up.

Thanks Volvopaul your views are always considered with great respect.
Where do I go for an exchange unit?
I guess VP is the obvious answer but you may know a better route to Borg Warner
Midland Turbo have also quoted me £670 +VAT for a new unit. In the scheme of things this seems cheap. What's your take on this?

About 300 less than a VP dealer , but there are 3 variations of this turbo as the for example the 41/43 unit isn't the same as the 44/300 unit I'm told, I'm not sure what you get from MT.

My engines are KAD43 with K26 turbos code 5326 970 6497
I find the turbo business quite odd where I can buy a balanced turbine and shaft for £92.80 from Turbo Rebuild but most auto turbo rebuilders I've contacted say they can't get the parts. Surely a K26 auto or marine is similar.

I know there are a couple of folk following my turbo journey.
I received yesterday my lovely brand new Borg Warner turbos from Turbo Rebuild for £792 each incl VAT and delivery. My goodness they are heavy!
The point of this note is to say they come complete with gaskets (and even a little syringe with oil to prime the turbo)
I had separately bought the quite expensive gaskets which I will try to get a refund.
Off to Spain next week by car for fitting, hopefully in the sun.

Just resurrecting this one because although fitting my new turbos some months ago, I haven't been able to take the boat out until last week.
The engines performed beautifully so the turbos definitely the problem.
Thanks to all for your advice which gave me the confidence to go ahead to buy new (expensive) units. (Old ones had corroded bore as well as worn rotor)
Cheers
