Went around the Solent for a little fishing yesterday. Up to the forts for mackerel - found none, then Stokes bay where we anchored.

Leaving Stokes bay, the boat was slow getting on to the plane then the port charging alarm went off. Looking back I could see some steam coming from the starboard exhaust so switched off both engines and pulled up the floorboards.

The the port engine had mutilated and thrown its alternator belt, but the starboard engine had destroyed its pulley tensioner and completely shredded the main belt.

I didn't really fancy changing the alternator belt at sea as although conditions were good, its a difficult squeeze to get to the port alternator. Luckily we were still in 4 metres of water so I dropped the hook and called Seastart who got there within an hour and were excellent.

The alternator belt was thrown because the locknut on the tensioning bolt had come off so the engineer changed the belt and we had a slow trip back to the top of the Hamble on one engine.

So what are the odds of both engines packing up at the same time?

Oh and the VHF packed up with a "handset cannot contact base unit message" on both helms

Anyway, is a replacement tensioning pulley still available for the KAMD300 and is it easy to fit? Has anyone replaced one?

Any advice gratefully received

Pulley is a 3582324 it's same as my KAD 32, I carry a spare as it's the usual reason why the belt fails, straight forward to fit.

You also mention Mackerel, where's the best place in Solent to getter rods out? Have caught plenty in Torbay but I know how frustrating it is to sit there and not get a bite so looking for some advise for where to try in the Solent before I try.

Alternator belts fail when there allowed to run slack .
The plastic pulley cracks into splinters usually end up in the bilge .

When did you last make a check over ?
The slow running with super chargers running wears the whole set up out. Any KAMD engine should be run above supercharger cut out rpm as its purpose is to assist the boat on the plane and nothing more .

Just had to change a noisy one on a KAD44 - readily available, but £90 +!!

Can't really see the front of the engine so will be working from the side. How does it come off? and should I change the other one as a precaution?

Mackerel - The place I use is either side of No Man's fort. Seems very popular with leisure boaters. None there yesterday but we did catch a whiting

As for checking the belts regularly, I haven't done that as much as I should with this boat as its great to have all the extra room but its a bu^^er to unbolt the table, roll up the carpet, remove the flooring, remove the soundproofing and descend into the donkey pit :disgust:

Incredibly bad luck there, but the most shocking thing is you didn't fire off a mayday & no lifeboat was called, you just got on with the situation yourself and got the boat back to its home berth, not normal behaviour for a Solent boater :D
