The ignition switch has been temperamental, not always triggering the starter motor, now its not engaging the starter motor however many times i try

The switch has never, in my ownership, felt smooth, recon I need to check that
Part number 859573
I could check out the workings with my multimeter if i knew what it was supposed to switch on / off

Purple, orange, red, blue/red, yellow/red wires at the back

Anyone have a handy guide ?
The wiring diagram in the manual is none to clear to me :(

Or could be the starter relay ?
Can i go through the normal starting routine, leave the ignition on and manually trigger the relay by the engine ?

Where do i go from here ?

Many tnx for your contributions

I just replaced both of my ignition switches (kamd300 so the same part). Always felt a bit iffy then one day nothing
What you describe is almost certainly the ignition switch. Easy to change the big connector just pulls off the back of the switch assembly. Try swapping the switches over and see if the problem moves. Keypart seemed to have the best (gulp) prices for a new one.

edit -sorry, do you have one engine or two?

The worst way, after checking it with a couple of wires and a bulb once the switch has been isolated perhaps, is to fit a press button starter for a fiver if you don't want to lash out vast sums.

Just a thought!

I too may have one in my spares box, PM me if you're desperate! I bought a pair from Ebay when one failed, at £65 each, the guy had a bucket full of them as he worked for a boat builder that went bust in Sweden.

Whilst we're on the subject, my ignition switches units seem to rotate within the dash. Are they easy to tighten / lock into place?

It sounds like the metal locating tang has broken off, easy to see once switch is removed as it should locate into a small oblong cutout in the grp behind the mounting bezel.

Can they be repaired or do I need new switches?

The other end of the tang is riveted onto the switch and they have been known to break off next to rivet.
Have also seen them installed with the tang snapped off so that not necessary to file out oblong for tang. You may be able to tighten up enough to prevent spinning ( just be gentle switching on and off)

Hold the unit behind the dash, and tighten up the knurled ring in front of it, the ring around the ignition key.

Yeh, just one KAD, else i could swap stuff to exclude parts.
Just pm’d two forum members :)
Easy to tighten up, got the T shirt, tighten up the ring on the front whilst holding the back unit, put something round the jaws to protect the facia / ring.

Neutral switch is on the dash, one of three buttons. Good point, but did not touch that one, so should be ok ....
It’s lit up when attempting to start = normal.

Yes, i’d be happy to fit a push button starter, for simplicity. No one is gona steal my boat on a trailer.
You got a wiring diagram for that ?

IIRC the orange is your supply, or whatever colour goes to terminal 30 on the back of the switch, the two you are mainly interested in is blue/red which is ignition on supply for instruments etc, and yellow/red which is the crank signal to the starter relay. These colours are the same for all VP engines.
