Hi All,

One for the VP experts. I have a problem with my T40's EDC control. One engine started giving me trouble with not shifting into gear. I ran a reset procedure which did not appear to work but when motering home on one engine the other started shifting again. Was fine a weekend later but when taking the boat out the water no shifting and no engine start. After acknowledging the alarm the engine start OK but I think the actuator is stuck in forward. (boat out of the water now) Is there anythink I can check before getting the pro's involved. The error code is 5.4 which indicates a short circuit. Would be interesting if I need to read this as a real short in the wiring or this is just a generic description.

You probably already have this from the manual, but incase you don't....

Code 5.4 Forward gear
Cause: Short-circuit or open-circuit in the wiring for reverse
gear/gearshift control actuator (drive) for the forward
gear.
Consequence: Shifting is not possible.
• Reverse gear: The gear is disengaged (if possible).
• Drive: The engine is stopped in the gear selected when
the fault occurred.
NOTE! The engine can be started as soon as the diagnostic
trouble code (DTC) is flashed out.
WARNING! If the engine is started with a gear engaged,
forward motion can only be interrupted by
switching off the engine with the start key or the stop
button.
Corrective action:
• Check the wiring and the connections for the reverse
gear/actuator.
• Erase the diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
• Start the engine.
• Emergency shifting is possible

Thanks Alt but had that info in the manual. Was hoping Volvo Paul or someone else could offer some real life experience before I stripping connectors.

Check to see if neutral light is on when the shift actuator is in neutral.
If it isn't then the shift actuator is worn.
Recalibrate the controls and this can hopefully reset the system.
If it won't go into calibration mode( setting) then disconnect the shift cable from the drive and set it manually to the mid position, the neutral switch may then become active and all should be well to recalibrate.

It may be that after all the efforts the actuator is worn out.

Lastly check the fuse for the shift, it's near the starter motor.

Wel not quite this weekend. As the boat was out of the water if found that kids and backlog after a summer of boating stopped me getting to the boat :)

Turned out the fuse was blown. Thx VP. Would have been fun if I you had not told me where to look. Dit not get a chance to further investigate.
Next I will have the cables replaced at the drive service and then troubleshoot further. I suspect resistance in the shifting cable or gear caused the fuse to blow.
Not sure how to explain the earlier internmittent problem though. More to come.

Was fuse corroded in anyway. Poor contact between surfaces might mean high resistance which could cause problem.

Fuse looked ok. Was in a splashproof holder and looked OK. Bit difficult to see hanging upside down.
It could be that a stiff shift cable would cause the actuator not to find neutral sometimes.
Will check the cables and troubleshoot from there. Don't want to use the actuator untill I know how the cables are.
