Bruce, Volvo often change the part number when they use a new supplier. I guess that with a Volvo part you can have more confidence that it will be to the same spec as the original and should work out of the box. If it's a duff part then you can be sure that dealers will complain.
With a pattern part, as you have purchased, it could be any old Air Conditioning clutch that some company has sourced.
I guess there are some parts that it's safe to use a pattern equivalent for and others that will be inferior.
There are a couple of active Facebook Groups for VP engines. Might be worth asking somewhere there if they can recommend a better pattern part?
@volvopaul will correct me if I'm wrong, but I recall that he's not happy fitting OEM parts for the very reason you have discovered.
Sorry if this sounds patronizing, it's not my intention!

Pete, see the above posts. Volvo do not make our clutch any more. Secondly Volvo never made the SC in the first place either. Bit like your turbo charger. Ogura make clutches, it just so happens they also made the SC but their main trade is clutches. So whereas I dont see your comments as patronising I do see them as somewhat myopic. Yes in this instance the vendor has cocked up but I would never have any concerns about buying an original manufacturer's clutch despite it not arriving in a Volvo box in much the same way I suspect you'd have no issue having your turbos replaced with an original Borg Warner at half price of the exact green painted variant even if Porto will tell you it's shite despite the man running Borg Warners himself.
